The 2020 Hero Open is this week’s European Tour event and, though it’s overshadowed by the WGC St Jude Invitational, it takes place at the beautiful Forest Of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club.
After a few Wednesday to Saturday tournaments, the Hero Open also returns to the more traditional Thursday – Sunday tournament (30 July – August 2).
The Forest of Arden is situated in Birmingham and was a stalwart venue for the European Tour between 2001 – 2005, when it staged two English Opens and three editions of the British Masters. Those five events were won by Thomas Bjorn, Barry Lane, Greg Owen, Darren Clarke, and Peter O’Malley. But with golf having made such advancement in terms of clubs, balls, and fitness since then, it’s hard to use those to pinpoint many potential winners this week.
The signature hole is the par-3 18th, which plays 211 yards over a lake to a massively wide green. The course also features four reachable par-5s.
Joost Luiten and Thomas Detry are popular once again with the bookies but, after fluffing their lines since lockdown, I can’t see them being as popular with punters this week.
The next three in the market are Andy Sullivan, Ryan Fox, and Justin Harding, who are all proven winners who finished in the top-8 at last week’s British Masters. They’re all shorter than last week’s winner and runner-up Renato Paratore and Rasmus Hojgaard, and the latter two are young guns who could yet reach much higher rankings on the world stage.
Another couple of young guns that are due a good performance are Minwoo Lee and Guido Migliozzi, while Eddie Pepperrell remains high in the market but needs to return to his best form to win this week. Sam Horsfield, Benjamin Herbert, and Alexander Bjork are others with back from that would give them a leading chance.
It’s hard to find a player with good course form and good recent form this week, so Robert Rock is our Hero Open tip 2020. The Englishman was fourth at the Forest of Arden way back in 2003 and, though he’s known for being a coach as much as a player these days, he showed plenty of quality form last week to also finish fourth at the British Masters. Good enough to hold off Tiger Woods in his prime, he looks a value pick.
