The 2020 Gimcrack Stakes takes place on Friday 21 August and this Group 2 contest takes place over 6-furlongs. 10 runners are set to line up and, with seven of those 10 runners having won last time out, plenty of dreams are going to have been dashed come 2.50 on Friday afternoon.
Lauded is officially the third highest-rated runner but, though he has place claims, he looks exposed. Escape Route is also good enough to pick up some prize money but needs to find further improvement on what is just his third run.
Roman Dynasty has the most to prove of the last-time winners, as his win came on the all-weather at Wolverhampton. Devilwala also has plenty to find on the clock. Mohawk King is the other horse to have won his only race and he’s among the leading fancies after doing so impressively. His trainer Richard Hannon also won last year’s Gimcrack Stakes with Threat.
Minzaal was fourth behind Mohawk King on debut but was shorter in the market that day. He also met trouble in running after travelling like the best horse. He made amends at odds of ½ (1.50) next time, though it’s hard to gauge whether he needed to improve to do so. But trainer Owen Burrows remains in good form and a big run is expected.
Mystery Smiles has won both his races so far and beat a 97-rated at Chester last time. That showed he has plenty of pace for this trip and he may go well, despite his trainer not having any great affiliation with the race.
Seven Brothers is the other horse that is 2 from 2 in this field and his trainer Kevin Ryan has plundered this prize three times since 2012. Seven Brothers showed a determined attitude to keep his head in front and he was giving 11lb to the runner-up. He’s another who could go close, having proven himself over course and distance.
Ubettabeliveit has win his last two races for a trainer and jockey who do well at York, and he was well-backed to win last time. The favourite did disappoint but he looks a sprinter of fair potential.
Yazaman gets another chance to improve on three runner-up finishes. William Haggas has won this race three times since 2006. All three of his winners has also had at least four runs, with only winning his previous race.
