The 2020 Garrowby Stakes takes place at York Racecourse on Sunday 6 September. This Listed Race over 6-furlongs is the highlight on the card and it has attracted a competitive field of 10 runners.
Judicial has won three of his five races under Callum Rodriguez and it’s no surprise to see him among the market leaders. But he looks a favourite to take on as he’s not placed in three runs at York. Despite winning over 6-furlongs at Chester and on the all-weather, most of his best form has come over 5-furlongs. York’s ground is forecast to be on the soft side of good and that will put a further emphasis on stamina.
Three-year-olds have won three of the eight editions of the Garrowby Stakes and the Classic generation accounts for half of the 10 runners this time. Galadriel looks the least likely winner. Rated just 79 before finishing third in a Listed race in France last time, his new mark of 92 flatters him.
Starman is rated 97 after winning both his races but the form has yet to be tested. He’s yet to reach the ceiling of his ability but this race may be asking too much of him this early in his career. That comment also applies to Aristocratic Lady. She made it three wins on the bounce when winning a handicap off 87 last time but this is a massive step-up in class.
The 104-rated Ventura Rebel is a frustrating sort as, having run third in the Commonwealth Cup, he’s been beaten in two easier Listed Races since, including here at York. That makes Mum’s Tipple the most interesting 3-year-old. He won by 11-lengths on his last visit to York but, having done little since, he will need the return to the Knavesmire to bring out the best in him.
Watan has some back form at York having been second in an Acomb Stakes but he was beaten in a handicap last time. Major Jumbo is two from three over course and distance but was getting 7lb from Dakota Gold when beating that one by a neck. He also finished well behind Dakota Gold last time.
That represented a return to form for Dakota Gold and he could be worth a saver having won four times between August and October last year. Trainer Michael Dods is also in great form.
Jash is our tip for the Garrowby Stakes 2020. The four-year-old has been limited to just four runs so far but was good enough to run Ten Sovereigns to a neck in a Group 1 as a 2-year-old. He was rated 118 at the time and, with his best form coming at this time of year, he’s a sporting bet.
