Our Tip for 18:45 Galway

Sub Lieutenant

1pt Each Way @ 26.00 Betvictor, Boyle Sports

The 2020 Galway Plate is the highlight of the third day of the 2020 Galway Festival. This Grade A handicap chase is run over 2 miles 6 furlongs and 111 yards and, as normal, it has attracted a competitive field of 22 runners.

Gordon Elliott has trained three of the last four winners of the Galway Play and he saddles five of the runners this year, as well as having the second reserve. The Big Lense looks the least likely winner having struggled off his current mark of 135 since winning off 118 and 126.

The Storyteller also looks on a stiff mark of 158, which is 9lb higher than any of the last 10 winners have defied. Three Musketeers could enjoy today’s trip after being beaten on his last two runs over further and looks handicapped to play a role. Likely favourite Galvin should also go close off a mark just 6lb higher than when second at the Cheltenham Festival. Dinions is more of an unknown as he goes into handicap company on a mark of 145 but needs to put his last disappointing run behind him.

Another horse venturing into handicap company for the first time is Royal Rendezvouz. He’s won a maiden hurdle at Galway in the past and is the choice of jockey Paul Townend from a strong-looking sextet of Willie Mullins-trained runners. The others are Easy Game, Robin Des Forets, Cabaret Queen, Liveloughlaugh, and Blazer.

Henry De Bromhead has won two of the last five runnings of the Galway Plate and he has two entries this year. Spyglass Hill is the choice of Rachael Blackmore, but he only won off marks of 116 and 118 in handicap hurdles and ventures into handicap chase company for the first time off 146. Only time will tell if he’s good enough.

The other De Bromhead-trained runner Sub Lieutenant looks more interesting, as this former Grade 2 winning chaser was an excellent fifth in this race two years ago off a mark of 158 and he went on to win a chase at the meeting four days later. He returns at the age of 11, which could be too old, but a mark of 148 makes him interesting, especially as his jockey claims a further 7lb off his back. That’s why Sub Lieutenant is our Galway Plate tip 2020.
