The Euram Bank Open (July 16-19) takes centre stage on the European Tour this week. It is better known as a Challenge Tour event and, because of that, there aren’t a lot of household names playing. The weakness of the event also means it isn’t being shown on Sky Sports, which is a shame because the host venue the Adamstal Golf Club is stunning.
It’s also going to provide the players with an unusual test compared to most of the courses the European Tour uses. Measuring just 6,473 yards, the Adamstal Golf Club is set in the alpine foreland of Austria and has been likened to Crans-Sur-Sierre in Switzerland. Set 3,500 feet above sea level, players and caddies will also have to work on their distance control. The ball is likely to fly around 10% further than normal if it’s warm, while a variety of elevation changes will also need factoring in.
Joost Luiten has decided to stick around after blowing a big chance to win at one of his favourite venues last week but this test could also suit him. The driver is the club that causes the Dutchman most problems and, as he won’t need to hit it off a lot of tees this week, his majestic iron-play could be a big factor. However, at around 5/1, I can pass.
Adri Arnaus is competing for second favouritism but, while the Spaniard in a fantastic ball-striker, this course may not lend itself to his power-hitting.
One player that should be an ideal fit for Adamstal Golf Club is Lorenzo Gagli. The short-hitting but accurate Italian has made a living out of his ability to hit fairways and greens and that should be the skillset the winner will require this week. Gagli caught the eye at last year’s Scottish Open and made himself a pick for this tournament by finishing second in the Omega Masters at Crans-Sur-Sierre. He’s since posted top-12 finishes at Qatar and Oman and he won’t get a better chance than this to win on the European Tour. That’s why Gagli is our Euram Bank Open tip.
