The 2020 Doonside Cup takes place at Ayr Racecourse on Saturday 19 September, when it is one of the biggest supporting races on the Ayr Gold Cup card. This Listed Race is run over 10-furlongs and it has attracted seven runners.
The 98-rated Dalgarno shouldn’t be winning, as the best of his rivals are much better than him. This also looks a much tougher task than those he’s spurned recently.
What’s The Story finished second in last year’s Doonside Cup but, while he was rated within 1lb of the horses that finished first and third that day, this year’s field is much classier.
San Donato looked sure to have a good season when chasing home Moaather on his seasonal debut. But he was beaten much further by that rival next time and finished last over 7-furlongs next time. He needs this step-up to 10-furlongs to bring about some improvement but he’s not a guaranteed stayer.
Euchen Glen has a tremendous record at Ayr, winning four of his five races here, including being 2 from 2 over course and distance. If there’s to be a shock, it may be him, but he does have a bit to find on the ratings. His last win also came over half-a-mile further.
Addeyb is a classy individual who has most things in his favour, but this Group 1 winner in Australia must concede 7lb to some useful rivals. His stable has sent out a few winners this week, but he may have much bigger targets ahead with another imminent trip down under on the cards.
Lord Glitters is a Group 1 winner without a penalty in this contest. That Group 1win came At Royal Ascot in 2019 but he hasn’t managed to get his head in front since. He’s also finished behind two of today’s rivals this season, beaten a length behind San Donato at Ascot over a mile, while he was also half-a-length behind Fox Chairman at York.
Fox Chairman is our Doonside Cup tip 2020. He’s finished runner-up on his last two starts behind two improving rivals but neither of them had to concede 7lb to him. He also won’t mind the current good-to-soft ground forecast or if it dries up a bit. This race looks likely to have been a long-term target for him, with his trainer Andrew Balding winning three of the last six editions of the Doonside Cup with lower-rated horses.
