The 2020 Corales Championship takes place from September 24-27. It is one of the newest PGA Tour event, and it takes place in the Dominican Republic for the third consecutive year. Despite it’s unusual setting, it offers the winner of this weaker than normal event the chance to earn the lion’s share of a $4 million prize fund, a 2-year exemption on the PGA Tour, and 500 FedEx Cup points.
The Corales Golf Club was first used to stage two Korn Ferry events prior to it becoming a PGA Tour event in 2018. Located on the Dominican coastline, it is a Par-72 measuring 7,668 yards. But while it sounds like a monster, warm and dry conditions mean it doesn’t play anywhere near its length. This theory is backed up by the previous winners Graeme McDowell and Brice Garnett, both of whom aren’t renowned for their power.
With a two-tier start in operation on Thursday and Friday, it’s worth noting that the front nine holes tend to be much easier to go low on than the back nine. So, take that into consideration if you’re betting in-play over the first two days.
In a weak field, it’s surprising to see past winners Brice Garnett and Graeme McDowell freely available at 66/1 and both could bounce back to form on a course that clearly suits.
With some bookmakers offering up to 8-places each-way this week, it could also be worth taking note of the players that have posted a top-8 finish in the last two editions of the Corales Championship. Mackenzie Hughes is the lowest priced of those players at 20/1, with Denny McCarthy next lowest at 35/1, while Zhang Xinjun is 50/1 and Keith Mitchell is 80/1.
The remainder are all available at three-figure prices: Seamus Power 100/1, Chris Stroud 125/1, Jonathan Byrd 200/1, Aaron Baddeley 200/1, Kelly Kraft 200/1, and George McNeill 300/1.
But I’m going to take a chance on a player making his tournament debut this week, and Pat Perez is our Corales Championship tip. He’s posted three top-23 finishes in his last five tournaments and his last time out 9th came in a stronger field than this week’s.
He’s also posted four top-10 finishes from six starts on Paspalum putting surfaces. The last of those was at EL Cameleon in Mexico, where the last two winners of this tournament also had a great record.
