The 2020 Celtic Classic is this week’s European Tour event. It is been staged on the Twenty-Ten course, Celtic Manor, Wales, a golf course that will also stage next week’s ISPS Handa Wales Open.
The Twenty-Ten course staged one of Europe’s best Ryder Cup victories and it should provide the professionals with a sterner test than last week’s venue where Andy Sullivan won with a total of –27 under.
There’s more than average room off the tee on this par 71 layout measuring 7,354 yards, but players will still have to avoid the water that is on play on plenty of holes. There’s also a fun mix of nine par-4s, five par 3s, and four par 5s. Birdies on the par 5s will be crucial this week, while bogey avoidance on the par 3s will also be required for victory.
If you’re looking for past form pointers this week, then the Twenty-Ten course stages the Wales Open from 2008 to 2014, after which the tournament was removed from the European Tour schedule. However, some members of this year’s field will have fond memories of the course.
Joost Luiten is the obvious one on past course form, as the Dutchman finished 2/4/1 here between 2012 and 2014. But the bookies haven’t missed that by making him joint-favourite, and he’s blown easier chances than this recently at courses where he also had good back-form.
Four players in this week’s field tied for fourth in 2014. Edoardo Molinari is hard to recommend on the back of two missed cuts. Mark Warren has already claimed one tournament since lockdown, and he was a more encouraging 34th last week after two missed cuts.
Jamie Donaldson would love to win in Wales and, after two top-15 finishes in his last two tournaments, the Welshman could easily contend this week. However, big-hitter Nicolas Colsaerts looks the most interesting of the quartet after a back-to-form top-10 last week.
Another power-hitter Thomas Pieters could take this course immediately, but he may be rusty on his return to action. Last week’s winner Andy Sullivan also can’t be discounted, but he’s finished no better than 46th following his three previous victories.
Min Woo Lee is this week’s Celtic Classic Tip. A back-to-form sixth last week, this big-hitting youngster looks a good fit for this week’s test and odds of 50/1 look generous.
