Burnley and Manchester City face each other in the EFL Cup at Town Moor on Wednesday 30 September. Neither team has made a great start to the season, with Burnley losing their opening three games and City losing 2-5 at home to Leicester last weekend.
The problem that both Sean Dyche and Pep Guardiola are facing is a long list of injuries and both managers have a difficult decision to make regarding how seriously they want to take the EFL Cup. Burnley travel to Newcastle on Saturday, while Man City face Leeds away from home, and neither manager is likely to risk key players.
That means that this may be a clash of the reserves and, as those players drafted in will have plenty to prove, our Burnley vs Chelsea tip is for both teams to score at a shade of odds-on.
Burnley’s record in the competition suggests they won’t be taking it seriously. They’ve exited the competition at their first hurdle in each of the last three seasons, losing to Burton Albion, Leeds, and Sunderland. But they have scored on each occasion.
Of course, City have won the EFL Cup for the last three years. Despite that, Pep Guardiola showed in the first round against Bournemouth that he’s now afraid to give plenty of reserve players a chance to shine and he will surely do so again with the Premier League considered much more important. The match against Bournemouth ended 2-1, suggesting that Burnley should at least be able to grab a goal.
