The 2020 British Masters is this week’s European Tour event and it kicks-off a run of tournaments in England. Watch out when your placing your bets this week as the British Masters is being played from Wednesday 22 – Saturday 25 July.
The British Masters was first played in 1946 and was one of the biggest annual events on the European Tour up to 2008. After a six-year absence, it made a return in 2016. However, if you’re looking at past form this week as a potential pointer to finding this week’s winner, it’s worth noting that the 2017 edition was also played at this year’s venue Close House.
The Colt Course at Close House was only opened in 2011 and it was designed by Scott MacPherson with a little help from European Tour stalwart Lee Westwood, who hosts the tournament this week. The course measures just 6,872 yards and generous fairways don’t put an emphasis on accuracy. However, second shots need to be pinpoint to maximize birdie chances by hitting the right part of the testing green-complexes.
Lee West wood heads the market this week with all the bookmakers and the former British Masters winner obviously knows the course well. He was 15th here in 2017, in a much stronger field, and was in better form when last seen than he was the time. He could easily give you a run for your money but the extra pressure of being host isn’t an easy burden to carry.
Thomas Detry is second-favourite but has failed to take easier opportunities than this. The mercurial Eddie Pepperrell has finished first and second in the last two editions but missed the cut at Close House in 2017. He’s, apparently, lost lots of weight since we last saw him, and it will be interesting to see if he contends.
Defending Champion Markus Kinhult could also go well, as could the improving youngsters Min Woo Lee and Guido Miggliozzi.
Meanwhile, Richie Ramsay and Graeme Storm are two players at decent odds that challenged at Close House in 2017.
But the value looks to be Paul Dunne, who claimed the title here in 2017 with a stunning final round 61. He held off Rory McIlroy that day and this year’s field is weaker. He’ll surely be motivated by a return to Close House and is available at triple-figure odds.
