The 2020 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club (8-11 October) continues the great run of tournaments on the European this week.
Tommy Fleetwood is vying for favouritism at around 10/1 this week. Fleetwood will be hoping to keep up his good run of form after just missing out in a play-off at last week’s Scottish Open. But the weather made that tournament a real test and it may have taken a lot out of him. Fleetwood also doesn’t have a great record at Wentworth, with a best finish of sixth coming in 2015. Since then, his form figures read 69/MC/20/60.
Justin Rose is another world-class player and he’s twice finished runner-up in this event. He also finished eighth last year, but a leap of faith is required this week after he missed the cut in the one event he’s played during the last six weeks.
Tyrell Hatton is another top player that hasn’t played much of late, but he’s played some great golf on the PGA Tour this season. But he’s not much good form at Wentworth, with just one top-10 in six attempts.
Matt Fitzpatrick is another player that is prominent in the market that has looked short of his best recently. Two top-12 finishes suggest he may add this title to his CV one year, but he only finished 46th last year when not at his best.
Four past winners of the BMW PGA Championship line up this week, but Miguel Angel Jimenez, David Howell, and Chris Wood would be surprise repeat winners. Defending champions Danny Willett also arrives on the back of five missed cuts. What those four winners have in common though is they had all posted a top-5 finish in the event prior to winning it. Three of them recorded that placing in the year before their success, while Willett’s had come three years earlier.
Shane Lowry could easily be the next Willett, as three top-6 placings here feature among seven top-15 finishes in 10 attempts. But the Irishman has been out of form of late. At bigger odds, Christiaan Bezuidenhout catches the eye as he was third on debut last year, but the South African needs to bounce back from a missed cut last week.
That means Patrick Reed is our BMW PGA Championship tip 2020. The American loves to come over and plunder some prizes money on the European Tour and has been in good form of late in stronger fields than this. He was also an excellent fourth on debut last year, when he shot the best combined third and fourth round totals. That suggests he’ll go close on his second appearance and he rates a solid each-way bet.
