This week’s BMW Championship (27-30 August) is the second of this season’s three FedEx Cup playoffs. Only the top-70 in the FedEx Cup rankings can take part, with only the top-30 at the end of the tournament progressing to the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The 2020 BMW Championship takes place on the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club. It’s a classical course layout, with trees lining the fairways, one which this week will be set up to play as par-70 measuring over 7,300 yards.
Olympia Fields has hosted the 2003 US Open and more recently the 2015 U.S. Amateur. But the lack of regular course form poses punters the dilemma of whether to go with players that have played well in past BMW Championships, those with good form in recent PGA Tour events, or a combination of the two.
Dustin Johnson is the favourite this week after his 11-shot demolition of a strong field in last week’s The Northern Trust, and he won the BMW Championship in 2010 and 2016. The bookies are offering prices of up to 8/1 about Johnson going back-to-back but, as he’s now ranked number one in the Fedex Cup standings and guaranteed to be one of the leaders going into the Tour Championship, he may save another maximum effort until next week.
Justin Thomas is looking to go back-to-back in this event after winning the 2019 BMW Championship at Medinah Country last season. Thomas is currently ranked number two in the FedEx Cup standings, and he may also be happy to take a back seat this week with $15,000,000 to play for next week.
John Rahm has slipped to number 10 in the FedEx Cup standings and that means he’ll be giving up plenty of shots to the leader at East Lake if he doesn’t post a big finish this week. The Spaniard has also hit the top-5 in two of his three appearances at the BMW Championship, but the bookies are hardly giving anything away at odds of 10/1.
Other players who have posted top-5 finishes in recent BMW Championships include Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy, Billy Horschel, and Daniel Berger, and any of that sextet could go close.
Bryson DeChambeau has a poor record in the BMW Championship but, after winning the 2015 U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields, a missed cut last week will have given him a rest before a return to a course he’ll have fond memories of. Victory here would also take him to the top of the FedEx Rankings, giving him a start over the field in next week’s finale.
