The 2020 Beresford Stakes takes place on Saturday 26 September, when it is one of the highlights on the opening day of the Autumn Festival at the Curragh. This Group 2 Race is run over a mile and this year’s editions has attracted 13 entries.
10 of the 15 previous winners of this race had won last time out. So, I’m happy to dismiss the chances of Ides Of August, Jack Duggan. Lifetime Legend, Monaasib, Reve De Vol, Sir Lucan, Snapraeterea, Southern Cape, and Adakaz, who were all beaten last time.
That leaves us with just four runners who won their last races. Ace Aussie represents the excellent team of trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Shane Foley who have been having a great year with their 2-year-olds. But Harrington hasn’t claimed this race since 2007 and there are reasons to oppose this son of Australia. His win last time came on much faster ground, and the second was well-beaten at a higher-level next time.
Dermot Weld hasn’t saddled a winner of this race since 1995 but he looks to have a good candidate for this year’s contest in Wuqood. The son of Dubawi was an unfancied 12/1 shot on his debut at Gowran Park but he was visually impressive. He ran wide throughout, having been boxed in an outside stall, but he travelled easily before quickening to the front. The downside is the second and third have run poorly since.
Aidan O’Brien has several form-lines involving the best horses from other stables in this race and his record in this race is fantastic. He’s won it an incredible 19 times since 1996, including the last nine renewals. He saddles three runners this year, with Sir Lucan looking the least likely winner of the trio.
Brazil looks the stable’s second string on jockey bookings, and he didn’t look anything special on his first two runs. But he improved on that form when winning his maiden over course and distance last time. But that win came on heavy ground and this son of Galileo looks sure to be suited by middle-distances next season.
High Definition is our Beresford Stakes tip. His draw in stall-13 would normally be worrying but he was also drawn in stall-11 on debut, when he sat out the back until powering to victory late on over course and distance. Having gone off at 7/1 that day, he’s expected to improve massively for that run, and he can take this before going on to much better things.
