The 2020 AIG Women’s Open grabs lots of TV coverage this week and rightly so with Women’s golf is becoming increasingly popular. The current bunch of top lady golfers is fantastic and lots of their male counterparts (especially amateurs) could learn lots from watching their rhythm and poise.
The 2020 AIG Women’s Open head to Troon for the first time and the Lady Golfer of the Year will be able to add her name to an illustrious list of male Open Champions at Troon that includes Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Henrik Stenson.
A typical day at Troon will see the ladies have a few birdie chances on the opening six holes, which run adjacent to the sea and often play shorter than their yardages thanks to a prevailing wind. The eighth hole is Troon’s iconic Postage Stamp, a hole that also yields plenty of birdies but has also been the scene of a few tournament ruining disasters.
The course then turns back towards the clubhouse for a difficult and demanding back nine that often plays into a sea breeze.
Hinako Shibuno returns to defend the title she won in 2019 at Woburn but the Japanese player looked out of sorts at last week’s Scottish Open where she missed the cut following rounds of 79 and 77. It’s hard to defend this great championship at any time, but almost impossible when you haven’t got you’re A-game.
The bookies favourite for the AIG Women’s Open is Danielle Kang, and the American can also claim the number one ranking in the world with victory this week. Kang claimed two consecutive titles before just missing out on getting in last week’s Scottish Open playoff by a shot, and she’ll have plenty of each-way supporters this week. The negative is she’s yet to even post a top-40 finish in nine previous Women’s Open appearances.
Stacy Lewis was the player that won last week’s Scottish Open and the American has the length to conquer Troon. Other players of note include Minjee Lee, Inbee Park, and Lydia KO.
One player that has stated she’d love to win the Women’s Open in Scotland more than anything is Georgia Hall and the 2018 Open winner is at generous odds to realise her dream. She’s our 2020 AIG Women’s Open tip at an each-way price.
