Winning the Derby remains the ultimate test of a middle-distance 3-year-old and, though the 2020 Derby is taking place much later this year, the race has lost none of its prestige. 16-runners are set to go to post and there are plenty of up and coming trainers hoping to land the race for the first time.
Aidan O’Brien saddles six-runners in the 2020 Derby, and Ryan Moore’s decision to ride Mogul has come as a surprise to many after the son of Galileo was well-beaten behind the re-opposing Pyledriver at Royal Ascot. He could step forward from what was his seasonal debut, but he was also beaten behind the 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko when the pair met at Newcastle last season.
Moore has got off Russian Emperor to ride Mogul, so Seamie Heffernen has the job of trying to win back-to-back Epsom Derbies on him. Padraig Beggy rides Vatican City, and he could be an improver stepped up in distance after finishing second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on just his third run. Amhran Na Bhfiaan, Mythical, and Serpentine are O’Brien’s other three, with William Buick and James Doyle interesting bookings for the first two.
Worthily represents Gosden but, while he’s a genius, winning the Derby on the back of one run would be taking genius to a whole new level.
Andrew Balding has the highest-rated horse in the field in Kameko, but he’s suggested he doesn’t think the 2,000 Guineas will stay 12-furlongs. Balding also saddles Khalifa Sat, who beat another rival Emmisary by a neck at Goodwood last time. Tom Marquand rides Balding’s second string, and it would be karma if he was to win after being jocked off the favourite to make way for Frankie Dettori.
Dettori has been given the ride aboard English King, who looked a potential star when winning the Lingfield Derby Trial, just as last year’s Derby winner did. English King also beat the same horse there and by the same margin of victory as Santiago did at Royal Ascot before going on to win the Irish Derby.
But our each-way Derby tip is Highland Chief, who flew home to win a Royal Ascot handicap off top-weight. His trainer Paul Cole is in top form and he’s looking to try and win his second Derby after Generous in 1991.
