The 2020 Oaks will create its own unique piece of history, regardless of whichever horse wins, as it will be the first year that the major fillies’ classic has taken place on the same day as the Derby. Just eight runners are set to go to post, but both the stables of Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden are represented, and they’ve split the spoils with three wins each in the last six years.
Peter Chapple-Hyam is the only trainer with just one runner in this year’s Oaks, but the first-time booking of Oisin Murphy will need to make a massive difference if she’s to make up the five-lengths she was beaten at Royal Ascot behind by Frankly Darling.
Roger Varian saddles two, with Tiempo Vuelo on a recovery mission after being a well-beaten favourite at Newmarket. Gold Wand looks his trainer’s best chance, with Andrea Atzeni keeping the ride after winning on her at Newmarket.
Aidan O’Brien saddles three runners, with jockey bookings suggesting how well they’re fancied. Padraig Beggy rides Peaceful after she finished third at Royal Ascot behind Frankly Darling. Splitting the pair that day was Ennistymon, and she’s the mount of Seamie Heffernan. However, it was Peaceful that was the shorter price at Royal Ascot.
But Ryan Moore has opted not to ride either of them as he’s, unsurprisingly, on the 1,000 Guineas winner Love. The daughter of Galileo powered away in the closing stages that day and is bred to be an Oaks winner. However, the horses in second and third that day where beaten further at Royal Ascot.
John Gosden saddles two runners this year and his former stable jockey William Buick takes the ride on Queen Daenerys, but she was beaten behind another stablemate at Newmarket last time.
That means Frankly Darling is our Oaks tip. She was the subject of glowing gallops reports prior to winning at Royal Ascot, when she has three of today’s rivals behind. But that bare result didn’t highlight her superiority, as she pulled hard through the race before accelerating away from her rivals in fine style. After just three runs, she also has more room for improvement that Love who has run eight times.
