The 2020 Midsummer Stakes takes place at Windsor, 15.00, Sunday 28 June. It is a Listed Race run over 1 mile and 31 yards and eight runners are set to go to post. It’s a race where the winner has tended to come from towards the top of the market in recent seasons, with seven of the last 10 winners returned at odds of 7/2 (4.50) or less, while the other three were only 9/2 (5.50), 6/1 (7.00), and 8/1 (9.00).
Foxtrot Lady is the lowest-rated runner at 97 in the field this year, but she does get 5lb from the boys. She was also rated 102 at her bet but her losing run is now 10 races.
Cardsharp won a handicap off a mark of 107 last season at York, but he’s struggled since. That win also came over 7-furlongs and he prefers that distance to the slightly extended mile here.
Davydenko drops back in trip after being well-beaten over 10-furlongs last time. But he won over both that trip and a mile last season, and it may be that a mark of 105 is currently the limit of his ability. However, he is a course and distance winner, be it that victory came in a much lower grade.
Urban Icon has also won a lower-class race here at Windsor, and he’s won a Listed race on the all-weather at Wolverhampton. He was nowhere near as good in another Listed Race back on turf last time over 7-furlongs, but he’s faded over a mile on both previous attempts.
Pogo has been running well in handicaps of late without winning but has fallen short in two attempts in Listed races. History Writer tried his luck in a Group 3 last time, but he finished 4½ lengths behind the re-opposing Stormy Antarctic, when getting 5lb.
Stormy Antarctic has an obvious chance as the top-rated horse, but he’s not run-up to his current rating for a while, and I fancy one will beat him.
Accidental Agent is the tip, as he’s currently rated 111 but is a former Group 1 winner that was rated 116 at his peak. He had 10 horses rated between 109 and 121 behind him when fifth back in Group 1 company last time and a repeat of that performance will be good enough.
