The 2020 Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap Hurdle takes place over 2 miles and 70 yards at Stratford Racecourse on Tuesday 21 July. It offers a first prize of over £5,393 and has attracted an interesting field of 10 runners.
Top-weight Beyond The Clouds has a tongue-tie fitted for the first time on his first run for Charlie Longsdon. The handicapper has dropped him 7lb since he last ran over hurdles 822 days ago, but he ran on the flat just 282 days ago and won last year. But his rating of 83 on the flat doesn’t suggest he’s particularly well-handicapped over jumps.
Innocent Touch hasn’t run for 278 days and won’t be winning if returning in the same form as last season. But he’s no forlorn hope on his previous season’s form when he beat the useful Midnight Shadow off a 4lb higher mark. Cubswin is the opposite in that he’s 4lb above his last winning mark and may need to drop in the handicap before winning again.
It’s hard to know what to make of Gunnery, who won raised to 132 after winning last year off a mark of 115 at Doncaster. However, while he couldn’t follow-up off 121 next time under a penalty, he was once rated 98 on the flat and could still have something in hand. He’s also won on similar ground on flat left-handed tracks.
Teqany is 5lb higher than when beating the re-opposing Beach Break who is 12lb better off when taking his conditional jockey’s claim into account. However, neither are fancied to be good enough. Scorched Earth ran well last time but hasn’t got a strong overall profile, while Statuario is inconsistent on the flat and over jumps but may need to drop-in-class to win off his handicap mark.
Trainer Olly Murphy will surely get more wins out of the 5-year-old Adjudant but this course and distance winner is another that may need a drop-in-class.
Some Day Soon is our tip for the 3.00 at Stratford. He completed a four-timer in novice hurdles over course and distance last year and wasn’t disgraced when tried over further afterwards when twice finishing close-up behind the useful Thyme Hill. He’s fit from finishing second behind a well-handicapped rival last time and the drop back two miles in first-time cheekpieces should suit.
