The Chipchase Stakes is a Group 3 at Newcastle Racecourse run over 6-furlongs, and this will be the fifth year the race has been run on the tapeta all-weather track.
The all-weather will be a new experience for the top-rated horse Brando, who would win this easily if at his best. But it’s a while since he’s hit top form and, along with fellow 8-year-olds Judicial and Keystroke, he’s overlooked on this occasion.
All winners had run in the last 50 days and, though this is a strange season, it’s still asking a lot for Shababi and Harry’s Bar to win this after respective absences of 413 and 133 days off the track.
Shimmering Dawn has plenty to find as the lowest-rated runner off a mark of just 94. The 96-rated Brad The Brief also needs to find further improvement, but he could do after winning his last three races.
Chiefofchiefs won at Royal Ascot off a mark of 95 and that was the first time he had dropped to 6-furlongs. He could enjoy the stiff test atNewcastle but may not get as strong a gallop as he did last week.
Fox Champion has been struggling to win over any trip but is one from one on the all-weather. But that win was only a class-5 novice. Meanwhile, Dream Shot and Major Jumbo both have the speed to mix it at 5 and 6 furlongs but may be vulnerable to horses with more stamina in the closing stages.
Mubakker is our Chipchase Stakes tip, as he looks the horse with the most potential in the field. He’s three from three on the all-weather at the trip and was most impressive when hacking-up in a course and distance handicap last time.
