Betting On The Next Dr Who

Published on February 3, 2017 by Darren @ Betting Gods

Doctor Who is one of the biggest TV shows of the last few decades, and regularly attracts millions of viewers per season. One of the top talking points amongst fans is who will play the next Doctor? Recently, Peter Capaldi has taken the reigns, but he’s come out and said he will be stepping down at the end of the year.

As you can imagine, the die-hard Doctor Who fans are going crazy trying to figure out who the next Dr will be. Regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of the show, this latest development has certainly thrown up a great betting opportunity! This piece will take you through some of the best candidates for the role so that you can bet on the next Dr. Who with confidence.

Olivia Colman

Olivia Colman is a BAFTA winning actress that’s starred in a lot of hardcore TV dramas. If she lands the role, she’ll be the first female Doctor ever. People will probably know her for her role on the hit show Broadchurch, where she stars alongside a former Doctor, David Tennant. As you can imagine, her buddy David has been singing her praises, claiming she’d be an excellent choice.

Speaking of Broadchurch, there are now links between that show and the Doctor Who series. The creator, Chris Chibnall, looks set to take the reigns as the new executive producer of the hit sci-fi series. Could he turn to a woman he knows well, and trusts will do a great job?

If you look at the bookies, they actually have Olivia as the favourite for the role. She’s got the lowest average odds along the board with a couple of bookmakers pricing her at 5/1. The highest price you can get her at is 9/1 from the folks over at Paddy Power.

Richard Madden

Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise Richard for his role as ‘King of the North’ Robb Stark before his brutal death (oops, spoiler alert). He’s been linked with the role before, but his love life got in the way. Richards ex, Jenna Coleman, was the Doctor’s companion the most recent few series, which caused many to think he was unlikely to take on a role that put him side by side his ex-girlfriend.

Now, she’s left the show, leaving the door wide open for Madden to swoop in and take on the role. After all, he’s spoken about how much he loves the show and would love to be a part of it. So, is it a match made in heaven?

The bookies are making him the favourite man for the role, with Sky Bet offering odds of 4/1 that he’ll get it. If you’re after the best value, then Ladbrokes have him at 10/1.

Richard Ayoade

If you’re a lover of hit comedy series, then you’ll know Richard Ayoade as Moss from The IT Crowd. He’s a hilarious actor and would be quite a change from the more serious depictions in the past.

Recently, he’s been directing a few films that starred Hollywood actor Jesse Eisenberg – who you may know for his role as Lex Luthor in the latest Batman film. While his background is in comedy, there’s no denying the man has a knack for acting. If he lands the role, he’ll also go down in history as the first non-white Doctor.

Bookies have Richard as the third favourite behind his namesake Richard Madden. Once again, it’s Paddy Power who offer the best price of 11/1 that he’ll get the job.

Ben Whishaw

Back from Matt Smith retired from the role, Ben Whishaw was one of the frontrunners to take over from him. However, Capaldi pipped him to it, but does that mean now is Ben’s time to shine?

Whishaw is an actor that’s starred in a lot of big films with a lot of big names. James Bond fans will know him as Q from Skyfall and Spectre. While regular film goers may recognise him for his role in the award-winning film The Danish Girl. Should Ben get the role, he’d be the first openly gay actor to play Doctor Who.

What are the bookies saying? A lot of them, like Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Ladbrokes, and William Hill have him at 10/1 to get the role. However, the best odds for him are the 16/1 offered by Betway.

If you’re looking to have a flutter on who will be the next Time Lord, then these actors are your best bets. If we had to pick our own favourite, it would be Richard Madden. He’d fit the role well and is at a very decent price.
