He’s the king of UFC, mixed martial arts, and possibly the whole of combat sports before the month is out – Conor McGregor is also now an official Betsafe EU Ambassador after inking a sponsorship deal with the sports betting provider.
McGregor has risen to super stardom through his UFC run, which has seen him claim titles in two weight divisions. But the man of the moment plans to transcend his sport in a dream boxing match on Saturday 26th August against pound for pound supremo Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, USA.
Betsafe has hit the headlines in the betting world by offering odds of 49/1 that McGregor can shock the world by defeating Mayweather in his first ever professional boxing match. The odds have special significance – Mayweather’s current record is 49 wins and no defeats, meaning a monumental win for McGregor would turn that resume into 49-1, denying Mayweather the chance to reach 50 with his CV unblemished. This would surpass the 49-0 record also possessed by the great Rocky Marciano.
The fight will take place at the T Mobile Arena in America’s gambling capital, and Betsafe has lined up several other tie ups as part of their Conor McGregor sponsorship. Fans will be able to enter a competition which will see them flown out to watch the fight on an exclusive private jet service, to be known as ‘Notorious Airways’, inspired by the moniker of the charismatic Irish star. That means the lucky winners will be able to sample the jetset lifestyle typically enjoyed by both McGregor and Mayweather themselves, as they travel to an event which promises to captivate the world.
Betsafe’s deal with McGregor will run for the next 18 months, and is applicable across the EU countries which Betsafe operates in. Betsafe will also enter the ring with McGregor, in kind, on the night, as the betting provider’s branding will be featured on the boxing debutant’s shorts.
The agreement marks the expansion of the Betsafe ‘sports empire’, which already includes sponsorship pacts with the likes of Manchester City, British UFC star Jimi Manuwa, former cruiserweight boxing champion Tony Bellew, Saracens rugby team, and Europe’s own UFC-style competition – Cage Warriors.
McGregor said in a statement: “Today I’m happy to announce that I’m partnering up with Betsafe. It is an honour for me to be an Ambassador for this great brand. Although real gamblers know the odds are stacked against them, we also know that passion overcomes the odds.”
Meanwhile, Nicola Fitton, Betsafe’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to announce our new partnership with Conor McGregor. Conor is one of the biggest athletes in the world today, defined by his extreme talent, work ethic and personality, which are values that we reflect every day at Betsafe. We firmly believe that passion always overcomes the odds, and there is no sports star in the world today that both inspires and embodies passion as much as Conor.
She continued: “It’s a pleasure to be a part of Team McGregor and we very much look forward to being in his corner over the next 18 months.”
Betsafe and The Mac Life
The Mac Life is a content provider which has been set up under the McGregor brand to provide exclusive videos related to the fighter’s activities, as well as MMA as a whole. Now Betsafe has agreed to sponsor the platform, giving their brand prominence when it comes to the exclusive content which is expected to be published by The Mac Life in the run up to, and in the aftermath of, fight night.
Can He Do It?
McGregor has been all but written off by pro boxers and pundits alike in the run up to the contest, with many giving him no more than a ‘puncher’s chance’ to claim victory over the fighter accepted to be the best of his era. Mayweather himself appears supremely confident of preserving his perfect record, having already registered five trademarks around the 50-0 resume, in anticipation of the resultant branding opportunities.
Indications are that McGregor has taken well to life inside the ring, with rumours circulating that he got the better of former world champion Paulie Malignaggi in a series of sparring sessions. There is also a significant age gap between the two fighters, with McGregor still a relatively fresh 29, while Mayweather is 40. However, Mayweather’s considerable boxing IQ and defensive nous are still expected to be a determining factor in the match up.
Thanks to the McGregor tie up, there are now two more special offers for all customers to get their teeth into in the range of Betsafe promotions, alongside some regular bonuses:
