30 Sept Australian Horse Racing Preview & Tips
This weekend is packed with high-class action across three programs, kicking off on Friday night with Moir Stakes night at Moonee Valley, followed by ‘Super Saturday’ at Randwick and finishing with the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sunday. With the quality of meetings on offer, there is undoubtedly plenty of potential for punters to win big by backing favourites, as well as potential outsiders.
SYDNEY AIRPORT FLIGHT STAKES – 1600m – 03.20pm
Despite failing to set the world alight in a series of trials earlier this year, before finishing sixth in the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill recently, odds on favourite Yankee Rose still looks good money at coming away with victory at Randwick on Saturday, especially with a run in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield at stake. Elsewhere, Awoke looks set to be her main challenger having impressed last time out in the Tea Rose Stakes, with many backing her to come of age at Randwick this weekend. Skylight Glow and Global Glamour are two other names to keep an eye on.
Betting Tips for Sydney Airport Stakes:
Outright – Yankee Rose
Each-Way – Awoke
EPSOM HANDICAP – 1600m – 04.00pm
In what could well be the race of the day at Randwick, Happy Clapper goes into the meeting with the ideal preparation. After placing at Doncaster and in the Queen Elizabeth recently, the five-year-old could well be in with a shout from the inside gate. Elsewhere, Hauraki has been in superb form of late, chasing home Jinx in the Tramway to demonstrate his undoubted credentials for Godolphin. To demonstrate the quality of the race, and with five wins from eight starts, Fabrizio is among the outsiders for the Epsom Handicap among bookmakers, with many backing the Gai Waterhouse horse to be well in the race heading into the final stages. However, with Chris Waller having won the past three Epsom Handicaps, as well as four-year-olds famously dominating the history books, it is in fact Torgensen who has gained the most attention this week. Having just missed out on the Bill Ritchie, jockey Kathy O’Hara will be looking to claim a famous win this time around.
Betting Tips for Epsom Handicap:
Outright – Hauraki
Each-Way – Torgensen
TURNBULL STAKES – 2000m – 03.55pm
Odds on favourite Hartnell has been in superb form throughout the Spring Carnival, and with the John O’Shea trained six-year-old suited to the big track at Flemington, he could well be impossible to stop. As for an outside bet, given the right conditions, Jameka could well be a big danger to Hartnell, with US horse Our Ivanhowe also potentially causing an upset. There is no such thing as a sure thing for a Group 1 race, especially when Jinx is not involved, however Hartnell should have more than enough to outlast his rivals on Sunday.
Betting Tips for Turnbull Stakes:
Each-Way – Jameka
GILGAI STAKES – 1200m – 02.00pm
With Grand Final football weekend meaning that events at Flemington are shifted to Sunday, it is perhaps apt that The Quarterback is among the most heavily backed for the Gilgai Stakes. Already a Group 1 winner at Flemington, beating quality in the form of Bkack Heart and Chautauqua in the process, the straight track specialist is perhaps surprisingly the third favourite at present. Odds on favourite Under The Louvre is yet to win down the straight at Flemington, while second favourite Faatinah will be coming up against a quality of field that he has not experienced before.
Betting Tips for Gilgai Stakes:
Outright – The Quarterback
Each-Way – Under The Louvre
THE BART CUMMINGS – 2500m – 02.35pm
Robert Hickmott trains two of the twelve starters in the Bart Cummings as he looks to add to his contenders for the upcoming Melbourne Cup, with five-year-old Aloft probably the pick of the bunch, catching the eye of many with his Australian debut at Moonee Valley recently. Elsewhere, Almandin showed something like his true form during his last outing, and is odds on with the bookmakers to add to his growing reputation at Flemington. Aside from this duo, Lucques and Vengeur Masque look like the only entrants likely to make any sort of impact, in what is a disappointing field for the Group three race.
Betting Tips for the Bart Cummings:
Outright – Almandin
Each-Way – Aloft
With Chautauqua looking set to dominate proceedings in the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday, it may well be worth waiting for the weekend’s action to back your favourites, and with trainers looking to earn a last chance entry into the Melbourne Cup, there could well be a few surprises in store.
