Racing Tips – Prince Of Wales Stakes (Wednesday 4.20)
Published on 16/06/15
The 10-furlong Prince of Wales Stakes is open to horses 4-years-old and older, and a select field of 9 runners are set to do battle after the withdrawal of California Chrome.
The last 10 renewals have been won by five 4-year-olds, four 5-year-olds and one 6-year-old, whilst the only jockey riding today who has won it in the last decade is Frankie Dettori.
Here’s our race of the day analysis and tip.
The only course and distance winner represents the powerful combination of Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore, but that win came off a mark of just 97. He’s now rated 111, which is 15lb lower than the Grey Gatsby, but could improve further back on quick ground.
Foreign raider who is somewhat of an unknown quantity, though none of the Southern Hemisphere horses ran up to expectation on Tuesday.
A massive fancy for last year’s Arc de Triomphe, but has not run since disappointing there, and his pedigree suggests he’d like the ground softer.
After just four runs he’s rated 120, and could still have any amount of improvement in him. Was third in last year’s Champion Stakes, a form line which makes about the equal of The Grey Gatsby on a line through Al Kazeem, though he may be capable of better. Will have to be truly top-notch to take this on his seasonal debut though.
French raider whose second placed finish behind Solow last time suggests he’s definitely not without a chance, though that was only a 4 runner affair, and he’s not proven on ground this fast.
Another Southern Hemisphere raider dipping his toe in the lucrative Royal Ascot pond, but may wish he’d stayed in warmer waters.
The Grey Gatsby
10 furlongs seemed to be the making of him last year, but it will be interesting to see whether Jamie Spencer can get the same tune out of Kevin Ryan’s horse as Ryan Moore tends to. Slightly disappointing last time, but is top-rated and has an obvious chance.
Frankie Dettori takes the mount on John Gosden’s 4-year-old. Won both his starts this season, both at Sandown where he’s now unbeaten in three starts, but could finish only 4th in last year’s Champion Stakes on soft ground that should have suited.
Free Racing Tips For Today
The Grey Gatsby and Free Eagle will surely be on the premises come the finish, but I can’t help thinking that Ryan Moore is riding Cannock Chase because he believes that this was always the target for Michael Stoute’s 4-year-old. He’s the only course winner and should relish the fast surface – so he looks the value bet at 8/1 (William Hill, Coral) 1/4 odds 1-2-3.
