An Interview With Kim Bailey
I recently had the privilege of chatting with Kim Bailey, one of the top National Hunt Trainers.
In fact, he’s the only trainer to have won the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle and can boast a winner on every National Hunt Racecourse!
So without delay, let’s see what this great man had to say…
Darren: To give us an idea of your background, what first attracted to you becoming a trainer?
Kim: My father trained a few horses for friends and did well with them; he also farmed but the racing side was something I just loved.
Darren: That leads me on to my next question of what motivates you to continue your work as a trainer?
Kim: Incapable of doing anything else. I get bored easily and believe it or not I just love it all.
Darren: It’s great that you love what you do and have such a passion for racing. You’ve trained around 1,000 winners and have won some great races. Which for you is the most memorable and why?
Kim: Can I have more than one? – Carnival Air winning at Sandown having spent a couple of years off the track.. it helped set me up in Lambourn.
Alderbrook winning the champion hurdle as it was rather a rush to get him there.. let alone win! Ernie Pick his owner owner had a dream on holiday over Christmas that he would win it.
Winning the Grand national was special as was winning the Whitbread the same year. Marcus Armytage said he wouldn’t and no other horse had.. he did!
Darren: You’re clearly very well respected and having achieved so much what do you feel the future holds and what are you most looking forward to?
Kim: As I said I love what I do and hope to keep up the enthusiasm and success for many years to come… health permitting etc. Another Gold Cup or Grand National would not go amiss.
Darren: Probably a tough question but if you have to pick just one race per year as your favourite, what would it be and why?Kim: Have to be the Cheltenham gold cup..the best of the best.
Darren: I tend to agree, anything Cheltenham is well worth watching. Within your own stables which horses should we be following this season?
Kim: Such A Legend goes chasing. Milord deserves to win a big one too.
Darren: Thanks Kim.Discounting yourself, who would you consider to be in the top three trainers of all time?
Kim: On the jumps; Fred Rimell, Jimmy Fitzgerald and Vincent O’Brien. On the flat; Vincent O’Brien, Aiden O’Brien and Henry Cecil
Darren: I’m mindful that you’re busy so I’ll keep this short and thank you very much for your time, it’s been a pleasure chatting to you. We wish you well for the future and looking forward to seeing you land more and more winners”
Kim: Racing should be fun and rewarding and I hope that your readers and members will see something of it from reading this.. smile and enjoy
