A Complete Guide To The Shergar Cup 2018

The Shergar Cup is the highlight of this weekend’s horse racing action. We’re taking a short look at the history of the Shergar Cup, the Shergar Cup Format, the 2018 Shergar Cup Teams, and the 10-Year-Trends of all six of the races that make up the Shergar Cup.

Shergar Cup History

The Shergar Cup commemorates one of the most famous racehorses of all-time, the 1981 Derby winner Shergar. The event was initially sponsored by the Aga Khan, who had owned Shergar before the horse’s infamous kidnapping. The first ever Shergar Cup was held at Goodwood, though it was moved to its current home at Ascot the following year. Dubai Duty Free is the Shergar Cup’s current sponsor.

Shergar Cup Format 2018

Four teams of jockeys take part in the Shergar Cup, which are currently Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, The Rest of the World, and The Girls. Each team consists of three jockeys, with each jockey riding in five of the six races that make up the Shergar Cup. Points are awarded to the jockeys that ride the horses that finish in the first five position in each race, with the winner being awarded 15 points. The runner-up gets 10 points, whilst the third gets seven points, the fourth five points, and the fifth three points. If a jockey’s mount is unable to run for any reason, and one of the reserves doesn’t take its place, the jockey receives four points. The winning team is simply the team with the most points when all six races have been run, whilst the jockey with the most individual points also receives the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle and a cash prize.

Shergar Cup Teams 2018

There is plenty of talent in the saddle on display at the 2018 Shergar Cup, with Joao “The Magic Man” Moreira being part of the Rest of the World team alongside Japanese legend Yutaka Take and former Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown. They could prove a formidable force, with the Rest of the World team looking to add to their previous six victories in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2016. However, dual Silver Saddle winners Gerald Mosse and Fran Berry will be hoping to become the first jockey to win three Silver Saddles by steering their respective Europe and Great Britain and Ireland teams to victory. Meanwhile, The Girls will be hoping to repeat their success in the 2015 Shergar Cup.

Great Britain and Ireland – Pat Cosgrave, Fran Berry, Adam Kirby
Europe – Pers-anders Graberg, Gerald Mosse, Andrasch Starke
Rest of the World – Yutaka Take, Joao Moreira, Corey Brown
The Girls – Hollie Doyle, Josephine Gordon, Hayley Turner
