It is a story about the feud over a gambling empire which two mobster friends have with each other. Starring De Niro and Joe Pesci as Same Ace Rothenstein and Nicky Santoro, Casino is directed by the acclaimed Martin Scorsese based on the book by Nicholas Pileggi – inspired by the life events of a man that ran four casinos for the Italian mafia. It shows the side of Las Vegas which is invisible to the naked eye because of all the glam of the gambling capital of the world.
The Gambler (2014)
This is a remake of the 70’s classic film, The Gambler and stars Mark Wahlberg in the leading role.
He plays the role of a literature professor at the university, Jim Bennet, who also happens to have a very unhealthy gambling habit. The literature professor finds himself in the most precarious of situations and owes a lot of money to the owner of the establishment which hosts the illegal gambling ring after having played a few games of Blackjack.
The movie revolves around him trying to find ways to pay back the owner with his student played by Alison Brie volunteering to help him making the effort. A truly jaw clenching story.
This movie is reputed to be one of the most, if not the most, quintessential movies that involve the game of poker.
The movie follows the goings on in the life of a law student called Mike McDermott who also happens to be a pure genius at the game of poker. Brilliantly played by a young Matt Damon, the movie revolves around his character, McDermott, trying to navigate the shark infested waters of the underground casino scene in the Big Apple as he aims to earn the stake he needs to enter the World Series Poker.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Another 1998 release, this cult favourite movie stars Johnny Depp.
The story revolves around a journalist who specialises in sports and his three day adventure in its entirety which starts off in the city of Los Angeles and sees them ending up in Las Vegas in a drug fuelled tale of the most epic proportions.
The portrayal of the sportswriter Hunter S. Thompson done by Depp in the movie is quite a surprisingly genuine looking one even though it seems overly done for the most part.
If you have ever wanted to see what the world is like through the eyes of someone who is a professional in the field of gambling, Croupier is the movie for you.
Another movie that navigates through the darker side of the gambling world in a more unconventional portrayal of the gambling world, Croupier tell us the story of Jack Manfred, whose job places him in a precarious position between the bettors and the bosses. Played by Clive Owen, Jack Manfred is a cold and calculated man who does not gambles at the game of chances at casinos but his personal life is riddled with the most appalling of situations where he is betting on different aspects of his life.
The events of the movie keep you going round and round, keeping you constantly on the edge of your seat. At one point of the movie, you see Manfred involved with three different women while also being a part of an elaborate scheme to defraud the casino he works for.
This is a movie that revolves around a gangster who goes by the name of Bugsy Seigel and his quest to build up an oasis in the middle of the Nevada Desert for the purpose of gambling aficionados.
The same place which later goes on to become the city of Las Vegas. His affair with a woman called Virginia Hill, however, ends up with him getting murdered in cold blood and he never gets to see the fruits of his dreams come to completion.
Ocean’s 11 (2001)
A remake of the very popular 1960 Rat Pack film with the same name, Ocean’s 11 is directed by Steven Soderbergh and features an ensemble cast of Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle and Andy Garcia.
This is as much an action movie as it is a comedy movie and it follows this group of people which consists of professional criminals and gamblers as they come together to pull off one of the biggest heists against a bank that has stored $150 million in its vault. All of the money comes from 3 major Las Vegas Casinos owned by Terry Benedict played wonderfully by Terry Garcia.
