Now that we’re well into the summer months, we’ve seen plenty of top sporting action take place already, including Jordan Spieth’s recent spectacular performance at the British Open. However, there’s still plenty more excitement to come in August, with exciting betting opportunities and money to be made. So here are six sporting events you don’t want to miss next month:
1. The Start Of The Premier League Season
It’s already been over two months since we saw Chelsea crowned as Premier League champions, and there’s plenty of fans eager to see what the 2017/18 season has in store. The action is due to kick off on 12th August, with the identity of the team likely to take the title anyone’s guess at the time of writing. The big six are, as usual, in contention, but can we expect another major upset like we saw with Leicester City the season before last? If a 5000/1 team can come out on top, then who knows what surprises this year will throw at us?
Current Favourites to win are Man City at 15/8 with Bet365 or PaddyPower
2. Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor
It’s hard to miss the phenomenal pre-match meets between these two big names in the lead-up to the most anticipated boxing match of 2017. Conor McGregor has made it clear that he’s not in the ring to dance around, but instead wants to put Mayweather in his place and show the world what he’s made of outside the cage. Though tensions are flying high and speculation is running wild, many top analysts are still failing to respect McGregor’s attempt and believe he has zero chance of taking down the current undefeated boxing champ. We will find out on 26th August.
Floyd Mayweather is clear favourite at 1/6, but we reckon there’s much more value betting on under 8.5 rounds at 19/20 with Betway
3. US Open Tennis
This year’s US Open sees its first match take place on the 28th August. After his strong performance at Wimbledon, Federer is now the reigning favourite to take home this trophy too, alongside Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, with Novak Djokovic ruled out until the new year with injury. When it comes to the women’s tournament, the field is very open. With Serena Williams absent through pregnancy, there is little to call between many of the big names, including Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Victoria Azarenka, Johanna Konta and Angelique Kerber.
Federer tops the mens beting markets, currently 6/4 with WilliamHill, PaddyPower and Unibet
Nadal is a close second at 11/4 with WilliamHill, PaddyPower and Unibet
4. Rugby Challenge Cup Final
The Ladbrokes Rugby Challenge Cup comes to a head on 26th August. After a close final last year between Hull F.C. and Warrington Wolves, hopefully we can see as impressive a spectacle this time round. The reigning champions will be underdogs this time, with Wigan Warriors currently favourites to take the title for a record 20th time.
Wigan are favourites to win, priced at 10/11 with WilliamHill
5. Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix
Winners of seven of the last nine F1 drivers’ titles, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton are, once again, neck and neck at the top of the leaderboard with just one point between them as the championship enters its second half. The Belgian Grand Prix, which takes place on 27th August, will be decisive in seeing which driver comes out on top. However, before then we also have the Hungarian Grand Prix to see if anything can alter the leaderboard.
Lewis Hamilton is the unsurprising favour to win the Belgian Grand Prix at 4/5 with Ladbrokes, but we wouldn’t rule out Valterri Bottas who at 5/1 with Ladbrokes is worth a small each way bet.
Whatever happens, we can be sure that August will be a memorable month sports-wise!
