There’s nothing like seeing in the New Year with horse racing from Cheltenham, which is why we’re welcoming 2020 in style with previews and free tips for the Dipper Novices’ Chase, the Paddy Power Handicap Chase, and the Relkeel Hurdle.
Dipper Novices’ Chase 2020 Analysis

This Grade 2 Chase run over 2 miles 4 furlong and 127 yards has been won by some top-class horses in recent years including the likes of Lostintranslation, Whisper, and Yanworth.
Paint The Dream, Matfog, and Garo De Juilley have plenty to find on ratings and shouldn’t be winning this.
Deyrann De Carjac has a 5lb pull at the weights with the favourite Champ from Newbury last time but he looked a non-stayer at a shorter trip that day. Champ should again have his measure but is odds-on to strengthen his position at the top of the ante-post market for the RSA Chase. But he ideally wants further, and Midnight Shadow could offer a touch of value against the odds-on favourite.

This race will have been on the agenda of Midnight Shadow ever since he won the Relkeel Hurdle on this card last year and he gets a handy 5lb from Champ, despite being rated only 3lb inferior. He travelled like a dream that day before beating the 12lb higher-rated Wholestone by over two lengths. His stable also banged in a couple of winners over the Christmas period. That suggests he should be in the first two, making him look like an each-way bet to nothing in this six-runner field.

Aso showed that class can prevail in this Grade 3 Handicap Chase by winning off top-weight and a mark of 158 last year. That suggests that the likes of Kalashnikov, Saint Calvados, and Cepage aren’t without a chance at the head of the weights.
Meanwhile, Ballyhill won the 2018 renewal off a mark of 132 and carrying 10-2, suggesting that he could go well again off a 5lb higher mark (but again carrying 10-2) this year. His trainer has also won three of the last six editions of this race.
However, seven of the last nine winners have been rated between 140 and 149. Four horses fall into that bracket, but OK Corral is normally better over a longer distance. Lalor has decent course form but his stable is on the cold list, whilst Old Grangewood has yet to place form three starts at Cheltenham.

Ex Patriot is the fancy. He won two handicaps off lower marks under today’s jockey last season, but he can still run off a mark he ran to many times over hurdles. His trainer has cleverly preserved that mark by getting him fit in novice chases, and it’s interesting that he was fourth in the 2017 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival behind Defi Du Seuil.

Relkeel Hurdle 2020 Analysis
15:10 at Cheltenham on 1st January
This Grade 2 Hurdle is run over 2 miles 4 furlongs and 56 yards. Plenty of winners have carried a penalty to victory in the past but the lowest-rated horse Quel Destin looks to have a tough job on his hands trying to concede 3lb to most of his rivals, and he needs the step up in trip to bring about some improvement.
William Henry also has a tough job conceding weight to all his rivals. He did win the Coral Cup here at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival off a big weight but has yet to run up to his very best form on any of his seasonal reappearances. Emitom also makes his seasonal reappearance and, whilst he’s won first-time-out before, the last 10 winners had all enjoyed a prep run. Meanwhile, it’s hard to know how Janika will perform reverting to hurdles for the first time for Nicky Henderson.
Summerville Boy could go well stepped up in trip over hurdles after falling over fences last time. The winner of the 2018 Supreme Novice Hurdle could go well, but his inconsistent jumping makes him a risky proposition.

Roksana looks the value bet. She was lucky to benefit from the last flight fall of Benie Des Dieux when winning the mares’ hurdle but her record at around this trip reads 1/1/1/1/2. This race looks sure to be have been on her agenda all year, whilst it looks like Plan “B” or a warm-up race for many of her rivals.
