The 2019 Copa America will draw to a conclusion on Sunday night when host nation Brazil take on Peru, who they’ve already beaten 5-0 in the group stages of this year’s tournament. Brazil are long odds-on to claim a sixth Copa America title and it will be a big upset if they’re not crowned champions.
Before the tournament reaches its climax, there is also the small matter of the third-place play-off game between Argentina and Chile, two teams who were much shorter than Peru to reach the final.
Ironically, Chile and Argentina are the two teams who have also contested the last two Cop America finals.

Argentina vs Chile
Argentina haven’t impressed at Copa America 2019, losing their opening game against Colombia before a second-half Messi penalty saved their blushes in a 1-1 draw with Paraguay. Luckily, a 2-0 win against Qatar was enough to see them advance to the knockout stages where they beat Venezuela 2-0 thanks to goals by Martinez and Lo Celso. But their failure to top Group B meant they faced Brazil in the semi-finals, a match which Brazil won 2-0.
Chile started in the opposite fashion to Argentina, beating their opening two opponents Japan 4-0 and Ecuador 2-1 before losing 1-0 to Uruguay to finish second in Group C. That set up a spicy quart-final with Colombia, which ended 0-0 before Chile won the penalty shootout 5-4. Chile were then a strong fancy to advance to the final against Peru, but found themselves on the end of a 3-0 beating, which had also been the result when the two teams met in a friendly in 2018.
Argentina and Chile met five times between 2015 and 2017, with the first of those being the 2015 Copa America Final, which Chile won in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0. They met in the group stages of the 2016 Copa America, which Argentina won 2-1. But they also clashed in the final, which Chile again won in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0. The two teams also met in World Cup qualifying for Russia 2018, with Argentina winning 2-1 in Chile and 1-0 in Argentina.
It’s difficult to know how seriously the two teams will take this match, but it’s a surprise to see several bookmakers offering evens about there being less than 2.5 goals, and one was offering 11/10 at the time of writing.
Three of their last five head-to-heads have produced less than 2.5 goals, whilst all five of Argentina’s games have all produced less than 2.5 goals in this tournament – and it’s worth reiterating that the last two Copa America Finals between them have ended 0-0.
Brazil vs Peru
For the second consecutive Copa America, two teams that were drawn in the same group have gone on to contest the final. But whilst Chile overturned the form of their group game defeat by Argentina in 2016, it will be a big shock if Brazil don’t win this game in normal time.
Brazil have been a bit hit and miss. As well as beating Peru 5-0, they won their opening group game 3-0 against Bolivia, and beat Argentina 2-0 in the semi-final. In between those games, they’ve drawn 0-0 with Venezuela and needed to win a penalty shootout against Paraguay in the quarter-finals after that match also ended 0-0.
But Peru’s natural tactics aren’t to try and frustrate the better teams and, in Brazil, they face a team that scores freely, and has also managed not to concede any goals so far in the tournament. Hopefully, Brazil can keep that run going and win the final to nil within 90-minutes at around 4/5.
