2018 World Cup Belgium Top Scorer Predictions

Belgium stepped-up a gear at the 2014 World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals after being drawn in what proved an easy qualifying group with Algeria, Russia and South Korea, before a last-16 victory over the USA. They scored 6 goals in those 5 games, with six different players scoring once each. They also reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, where no player scored more than 2 of their 9 goals.

Therefore, it’s possible that there could be some value in the 2018 Belgium Top Scorer Market.

2018 Belgium Top Scorer Betting
2/1 Romelu Lukaku, 6/1 Dries Martens, 6/1 Eden Hazard, 8/1 Christian Benteke, 11/ Kevin De Bruyne

Romelu Lukaku
Having scored 53 goals in 110 games for Everton the Belgian Centre Forward has maintained a similar strike-rate for Manchester United, and also for Belgium with 31 goals in 65 games. However, his international strike-rate has been excellent of late, with 20 goals in his last 23 games for Belgium. Only scored once at the 2014 World Cup, and twice at Euro 2016.

Dries Mertens
The Napoli forward has averaged around 2 goals every 5 games in Serie A since 2013, having scored 37 goals in 62 games for previous club PSV. Only scored 13 goals in 60 games for his country though, with 5 goals in 18 games in the last two years. Scored once at the 2014 World Cup.

Eden Hazard
Winger/forward who is better known for his brilliant assists, but still scores plenty of goals. Averaged more than a goal every 3 games for Chelsea since 2012, having scored 36 goals in 147 games for previous club Lille. Averages around 1 goal every 4 games for Belgium but, after scoring once at the 2014 World Cup, has scored 15 goals in 28 international games in the last 3 years.

Christian Benteke
His big move to Liverpool in 2015 didn’t really work out with just 9 goals in 29 games, and has since only averaged around a goal every 3 games for Crystal Palace. Scored 12 goals in 32 games for Belgium, but only made 1 appearance in 2017, though he did score twice.

Kevin De Bruyne
The 26-year-old Manchester City midfielder is the heart of the Belgian side, but is usually happiest making goals for others. Has scored 13 goals in 51 international appearances though, but only averages less than a goal every 4 games for his club side, who score a lot of goals.

Summary

Belgium are fancied to make the latter stages of the 2018 World Cup and, whilst the goals could again be shared between the players, that at least gives at least one player more of a chance to make a name for himself. It could be that Lukaku, who has a reputation for bullying lesser teams, could score a few against the likes of Panama and Tunisia in the Group Stages. However, Eden Hazard strikes me as the type of world-class player who has the ability to win a Golden Boot at one of these big tournaments before his career is over – and he looks the value at three-times the price of Lukaku.
