2018 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Preview And Tip

Published on 19/12/17

Wimbledon 2018 will take place between Mon 2 July and Sun 15 July, but it remains to be seen as to whether Roger Federer can make it Wimbledon Title number nine in the Men’s Singles.

Last year’s tournament seemed to fall into Federer’s hands as Nadal fell to Gilles Muller in the last-16, whilst Murray and Djokovic exited in the quarter-finals. Therefore, we thought we’d take a look at the current 2018 Wimbledon Men’s Singles ante-post market.

2018 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Betting

Roger Federer 3/1, Andy Murray 4/1, Novak Djokovic 5/1, Rafa Nadal 9/1, Alexander Zverev 16/1, Milos Raonic 16/1, Nick Kyrgios 22/1, Grigor Dimitrov 25/1, Marin Cilic 25/1, Stan Wawrinka 50/1

Roger Federer

Federer now holds the record with 8 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Titles, with last year’s win coming 5-years after his seventh win in 2012. He also became the oldest winner in the modern era and, though he could be forgiven for hanging up his tennis shoes, he would be very hard to beat if turning up in the same form as last year.

Andy Murray

The 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Champion has made it to at least the quarter-finals in every year since 2008. He can be forgiven his laboured efforts in last year’s quarter-finals when injury saw him succumb to big-hitting Sam Querrey. Hard to know if he’ll bounce back this year after taking time off to recuperate from that injury.

Novak Djokovic

Victorious at Wimbledon in 2011, 2014 and 2016 but, after achieving a career slam in 2016, he looked short of motivation in 2017. Early exits at the Australian Open and French Open were followed by a quarter-final withdrawal at Wimbledon and, like Murray, it’s hard to gauge his motivation or form as we approach the 2018 season.

Rafa Nadal

Won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010 but, since making the final in 2011, he has not made it passed the fourth round – even when playing some of his best tennis last season. His struggles on grass in recent seasons have been attributed to his recurring knee injuries making it hard for him to get down to the lower bounces – and he’s an unlikely winner.

Alexander Zverev

Five-time winner on the ATP circuit last season, but Grand Slams haven’t been kind to him so far. However, he put in his best performance at last year’s Wimbledon, when he was beaten in 5-sets by Milos Raonic. Looks sure to make further progress this season, but he may not be the type that finds winning the 7 consecutive matches needed to win a Grand Slam easy.

Milos Raonic

Another player whose season was curtailed by injury last season, but was only beaten by Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, having made the final the previous season. Has the serve and volley game to cause anyone problems, but may have to play an inferior opponent to make the breakthrough having looked shaky against the world’s elite players in other finals.

Nick Kyrgios

Made it to the quarter-finals in 2014 but, though big things have been expected of him, he has flopped here in the last 3 years. Suspect temperament holding back his talent.

Grigor Dimitrov

Semi-Finalist in 2014, but is another who has failed to live up to expectations here since. Unlucky to be drawn close to Federer last year, and could go well after his confidence-boosting win in the ATP Tour World Finals.

Marin Cilic

Three consecutive quart-final defeats in 2014, 2015 and 2016, but took advantage of some of the bigger players’ exits to finish runner-up last season. Could go well again, but tends to be vulnerable to the top players.

Stan Wawrinka

Looks a massive price at 50/1 for a three-time Grand Slam Winner but, though he would love a Wimbledon Title to complete his Grand Slam, he’s never made it past the quarter-finals here.

Summary

Nadal’s knee problems probably make him the easiest of the big-4 to rule out, whilst nobody knows how motivated Murray and Djokovic will be this season, and Federer may also lack the motivation he had last season. Therefore, it could be worth taking a chance on Grigor Dimitrov who, having shown plenty of form on grass in his younger days, could yet win a Wimbledon title after a great win at the ATP Tour Finals.
