The Sydney International (January 7-13) dates back to 1885, when Colonial Selectors used it to pick the Davis Cup Team. Previously known as the New South Wales Open, and the Championship of New South Wales, the tournament is played on the hardcourts of the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Club. The tournament is now an ATP 250 Series Event, and is used as a warm-up for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, by many players.

Australian winners of the Sydney International include four-time winners Leyton Hewitt and Tony Roche, as well as Ross Case, Geoff Masters, Malcom Anderson, Phil Dent and Rod Laver. Meanwhile, the most recent Australian winner of the Sydney International is the 2013 winner Bernard Tomic. Other notable winners of the event include Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer, Tim Henman and Pete Sampras.

2018 Sydney International Betting Guide

Gilles Muller 9/1, Alexander Dolgopolov, Diego Schwartzman, Gilles Simon 12/1, Philipp Kohlschreiber 12/1, Adrian Mannarino 14/1, Alberto Ramos-Vinolas, Damir Dzumhur 25/1

Top-Half

The top-half of the draw in Sydney looks potentially the toughest, and number 1 seed Alberto Ramos-Vinolas could easily exit at his first hurdle as he trails opponent Paolo Lorenzi 3-2 on head-to-heads. Number 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber could also be an early casualty, as Frenchman Gilles Simon could be his second-round opponent, if they respectively beat Jared Donaldson and Daniil Medvedev in their opening matches. Simon has beaten Kohlschreiber in 5 of their 7 matches on hardcourts, and comes here in fine form after winning in Chennai last week. Simon also holds a 2-1 lead over Lorenzi. However, Simon may find it difficult in the semi-finals, as his most likely opponents Adrian Mannarino and Alexander Dogopolov both hold decent records against him.

Bottom-Half

In the bottom-half of the draw, Number 2 seed Gilles Muller could also face a couple of tough early matches as he has lost his most recent encounters to the likes of Benoit Paire and John Millman. However, the bottom-half may well go to a player in the third-quarter in the shape of Damir Dzumhur. The 25-year-old made giant strides in the second-half of last season, when he followed up his runner-up finish in the Winston-Salem Open in August with victories in the St Petersburg Open in September, and the Kremlin Cup in October.

Summary

This may be a tournament that hasn’t attracted any of the top 22 players in the world, but it still looks highly-competitive, and the draw looks quite complex with many close head-to-head statistics. However, I’m happy to take one players from each half, with Adrian Mannario and Damir Dzumhur hopefully offering some value against some lower-priced players.
