The weather is expected to be fine and sunny right across Eastern Australia. Thanks to the Bureau of Meteorology for their long range forecast for Saturday.
This will likely mean a track rating of Good 3, but there will be pressure on the Caulfield Track Management team to water the course before Saturday, and get the rating down to a Good 4. This is on the back of some heavy criticism of last weeks conditions at Flemington, were numerous horses pulled up slightly lame after jarring up badly on a track rated as Good 3. Track Management there did not water the course on Friday, which made conditions tough for some gallopers. Racing Victoria will not want a repeat of that fiasco for this weekend.
Course and Barriers
The 1400 metre start is a precarious juncture on the Caulfield course, as horses have to quickly find a good spot within 200 metres of the first turn. Inside barrier draws are preferable, the further out you go means that some horses have to expend early energy to get across quickly, or get stuck out three-wide once they navigate the first turn and then prepare to enter the back straight. Either that, or drop out to the back and pray for luck in the running.
Form and Predictions
This years field is a big one with 19 runners entered, though the quality is not quite top-notch, other than topweight Irish horse JUNGLE CAT, who is a Group 1 winner in Dubai earlier this year. On class alone he’s probably a few notches above the rest of the field here, but hasn’t raced since that Group 1 win (video below) on 31st March. Godolphin’s James Doyle has flown down under to partner the horse. Respect.
HOME OF THE BRAVE is another Irish galloper who moved permanently to Australia som time ago. I think this guy can land the big fish on Saturday, his form has been excellent, his win in the Theo Marks Handicap a few weeks ago (video below) was won with some authority. Godolphin should be quietly confident about his chances.
The other noted Godolphin runner is OSBORNE BULLS who has built an impressive 11 wins/places from 11 starts, Is he up to Group 1 form? Many suggest that he is. Me? I’m not so sure.
The Darren Weir pairing of LAND OF PLENTY and PEACEFUL STATE are useful horses, but both have struck wide barriers here, which makes their chances negligible.
The South Australian DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR is another with a wide gate. He generally races on the speed but will need to get across quickly. I’m thinking he could be a good place chance if things pan out in the running.
MR SNEAKY is a promising type who ran a surprisingly good second in this race last year behind Santa Ana Lane. Not the worst, but a bad draw won’t help.
