Second richest horse race, the winner takes $10M out of a total pot of $30M. Horses run over dirt for 2,000 meters. Both Pagasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup were won by Arrogante.

Grand National, April 12-14
Aintree, Liverpool, England
First run in 1839, The most recent running of the race, in 2017, was won by One For Arthur, ridden by jockey Derek Fox for trainer Lucinda Russell.

Kentucky Derby, May 4
Churchill Downs, Louisville USA
Described as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” because of the short distance horses run (2,012m). Inaugurated in 1875 Only six women have ridden in the Derby.

1000 & 2000 Guineas, May 5 & 6
Newmarket, Suffolk, England
The 2000 Guineas Stakes was first run on 18 April 1809, and it led the introduction of a version for fillies only, the 1000 Guineas Stakes, by five years. Both races were established by the Jockey Club under the direction of Sir Charles Bunbury.

Preakness Stakes, May 19
Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Inaugurated in 1875 and many traditions have changed however some still remain. it’s a 1-3/16 long race in dirt race court. The total purse is of $1.5M.

The Oaks, June 1
Epsom, UK
Inaugurated in 1779. It’s a 2,420m. The event is named after The Oaks, an estate located to the east of Epsom which was leased to the 12th Earl of Derby in the 18th century. The fastest winning was performed last year in 2 min and 34.13 secs by Enable.

The Derby, June 2
Epsom, UK
Britain’s most expensive and prestigious horse race of the Classics. Inaugurated in 1780. The famous jockey Lester Piggott holds the record of nine Derby wins, set between 1954 and 1983.

Royal Ascot, June 19-23
Ascot UK
a week-long racing series with 16 group races, has been a part of British tradition initiated in 1711 by Queen Anne. The Queen and the Royal Party typically attend all of the event’s races.

Irish Derby, June 30
The Curragh, County Kildare, Ireland
It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs on turf. Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer with 12 wins under his wing and with 6 wins the leading winner is Morny Wing.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, July 28
Ascot UK
Held over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs, many of its alumni go on to race in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Inaugurated in 1951, as the result of an amalgamation of two separate races at Ascot which were established in 1946 and 1948.

Was first run on Sunday 3 October 1920, its 2,400M race. Leading jockey Frankie Detroit with 5 wins, leading trainer Andre Fabre with 7 wins.

Melbourne Cup, November 6
Flemington, Australia
Known as the “Race that stops a nation,” the Melbourne Cup is one of the highlights of the Australian sporting and social calendar.
