Form and Predictions
The Moir Stakes has been a tradition, run on the Friday night before the big AFL Grand Final held on the following Saturday. There is no Metro racing on the Saturday, though there is one 8 race card down in Mornington, in Melbourne’s south east.
This is a race for the speedsters, run over 1000m, with last years event won by the top-class (and now retired) filly SHE WILL REIGN, who was also the winner of the previous seasons richest two-year-old race; The Golden Slipper.
Some of the horses which line-up on Friday are also possibilities for the rich 1200m sprint The Everest, coming up in a couple of weeks time. That field hasn’t been confirmed yet, but mark my words, a couple of contenders are near certainties to start.
I’m thinking that three of the Darren Weir runners are right in the firing line for the spoils this Friday night. The former Japanese galloper BRAVE SMASH, VOODOO LAD and the probable favourite NATURE STRIP should all be well supported. This will be a dress rehearsal for their chances in The Everest.
South Australian mare VIDDORA is another who enjoys the drag races, and finished up a close up second in this race last year. She’s a Group 1 winner from last season (2017 Winterbottom Stakes, Ascot, Perth) and typically races well on these big occasions. Has a barnstorming finish, watch out for her late.
Probably the form horse of the race (other than Nature Strip) is Sydney sprinter BALL OF MUSCLE. He’s won his last two in what were pretty decent fields. Has got a good draw, and should be right on the speed.
Queensland sprinter HOUTZEN is attracting good early money. His first start back was running second to Nature Strip, which reads as a very good form line coming into this. Hasn’t struck Group 1 nor Group 2 success as yet, and with a quality line-up assembling here, he’ll probably be waiting for another occasion for a crack at the big time.
Victorian galloper FAATINAH went over to Dubai earlier this year and competed with distinction, winning a race at Meydan, placing second in another, and finishing behind the leaders in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint, won by Jungle Cat, winner of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Won fresh the other week (same course, same distance), so is right in the gun barrel for this. My ‘smokie’ of the race.
