The 2017 World Snooker Championships will once again be hosted by the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, with the Tournament taking place between Sat 15 April and Monday 1 May.

Reigning Champion Mark Selby is seeded number-one, whilst Judd Trump is seeded number-two, and the two Englishmen will be hoping to make it 6 winning Englishmen in a row, after Ronnie O’Sullivan won it in 2012 and 2013, Mark Selby won it in 2014 and 2016, and Stuart Bingham won it in 2015. Indeed, only last year’s beaten finalist Ding Junhui stopped it being 5 all-English Finals in a row, after final defeats for Ali Carter, Barry Hawkins, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Shaun Murphy, whilst Judd Trump was beaten in the 2011 Final by Scotsman John Higgins.

Since the modern era of World Snooker began in 1969, winners have hailed from the following countries: England (21), Scotland (12), Wales (9), Northern Ireland (3), Canada (1), Republic Of Ireland (1) and Australia (1) – so it’s no surprise that it’s only 1/2 that an English Player is crowned champion of the world again on May 1.

However, if you don’t fancy taking 1/2 about all the English Players Combined, then it could be time to take a look at the outright betting.

2017 Snooker World Championship Betting

Judd Trump 4/1, Mark Selby 9/2, Ronnie O’Sullivan 11/2, Ding Junhui 14/1, Neil Robertson 14/1, Barry Hawkins 16/1, John Higgins 18/1, Marco Fu 22/1, Sean Murphy 25/1, Stuart Bingham 25/1, Mark Allen 50/1, Ali Carter 50/1.

Top-Half

Mark Selby probably should be outright favourite on the evidence of the last few seasons, in which he’s won 2 of the last 3 World Championships, and 1 of the last 3 UK Championships, and 9/2 is more than fair about a man who’s won 3 of the last 6 big-2 tournaments. However, the top-half of this year’s draw looks the harder of the two, with Mark Selby finding himself with several potential big hurdles to overcome. Marco Fu is in his quarter, and he’ll certainly be no pushover on his best form this year. Meanwhile, the second-quarter contains Murphy, Junhui and O’Sullivan, so a big-name in the semi-finals looks assured.

Bottom-Half

Judd Trump has been the star of the season so far, but he’s often failed to bring his A-Game to the final. However, whilst it’s no surprise that he’s favourite, he potentially has to overcome the likes of Barry Hawkins, John Higgins and Stuart Bingham if he’s to make it to the final.

Summary

There’s a temptation to go for a couple of players at tasty odds however, with Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby winning 4 of the last 6 renewals – history suggests this often goes to the classier, inform English Players. Therefore, I’m going to stick with the inform players from each-half of the draw, and split my stakes between Selby and Trump.
