The US Men’s Clay Court Championship is an ATP World Tour 250 Series Event played on the American Red Clay Outdoor Courts at the River Oaks Country Club in Texas, USA. The event has a long history dating back to 2010, and is now the only ATP Event played on clay in America.
Americans have an excellent record in the event, winning 8 of the 16 renewals since the tournament was moved to its present venue in 2001. They have also provided 9 of the 16 runner-ups in that time. Therefore, it is no surprise to see American’s filling the first 3 places in the betting.
2017 US Men’s Clay Court Championship Betting
Jack Sock 11/2, John Isner 6/1, Sam Querrey 7/1, Fernando Verdasco 8/1, Steve Johnson 11/1, Feliciano Lopez 16/1, Juan Monaco 16/1
The in-form Jack Sock is ranked number-one here in the absence of any big-names, and his main early hurdle is likely to come in the form of Feliciano Lopez. However, the ageing Spaniard went out in the round-of-64 in both Indian Wells and Miami, whilst Sock made the semi-finals and quarter-finals of those events.
Meanwhile, in the second-quarter, fourth-seed Steve Johnson could face a tough early battle against 2012 and 2016 Champion Juan Monaco, and it will be interesting to see how the bookies price that one up with neither man in much form. However, it was Monaco who beat Johnson 6-4 6-4 though in their only previous match, which was also on clay in Rome in 2016. Monaco may then play Verdasco, and the score between them stands 9-6 in Monaco’s Favour.
Monaco also beat Sock in this event last year and, though Sock has improved since then, it could be an interesting battle if the last two Champions play each other in the semi-finals.
The third-quarter looks a good opportunity for Sam Querrey who holds a 2-0 lead over likely quarter-final opponent Thomaz Bellucci. He could then play fellow American John Isner in the semis. Isner is the higher-ranked player, but Querrey hold a 4-2 lead over him, and won their only previous clay court battle.
2017 US Men’s Clay Court Championship Summary
Querrey could easily land each-way money by reaching the final, but the problem with backing him is that he’s been beaten by both Sock and Monaco the only time he’s played them, and he’s lost both previous finals here. Therefore, I’d much sooner split my stakes on the two players from the top-half who look most likely to make the final, and prevail if doing so.
