$10,000,000 is what the winner of the Fedex Cup walks away with and, if the winner is also the person who wins this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake, then he’ll be $13,000,000 richer. The top-5 players in the standings, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Mark Leishman and John Rahm, are guaranteed the full $13,000,000 if they win this week. However, if one of the players outside the top-5 wins, his chances of winning all the loot depends where the likes of Spieth and Thomas finish.
Spieth will certainly have his supporters this week, as the 2017 Open Champion arrives here in great form having just gone 2/2/7. He’s also finished first and second here in 4 previous attempts and, if he can keep the ball in play off the tee, he’ll be hard to beat. He also handles the pressure better than most when it comes to the biggest of occasions – but looks a bit on the short side at 11/2.
Spieth’s best friend Thomas has arguably been the star of the season, with his US PGA victory being his fifth victory of the campaign. Sixth in this last year, when being nowhere the player he is at the moment, he probably doesn’t deserve to be 12/1 – and makes it into my betting portfolio this week.
Johnson hasn’t quite mastered East Lake, but hinted last year that he could do when at his best. He’s finished 5/5/6 on his last 3 visits, and could easily contend after a couple of quiet weeks after winning the first of the Fedex Play-offs.
Leishman was sublime last week and, if he arrives here in the same form, then the Aussie could easily blow the field apart again. However, not many players can bring their “A” game two weeks on the trot, and this will be only his second appearance after finishing 28th way back in 2009.
Last, but not least, John Rahm arrives here in great form after finishing 3/4/5 in the play-offs, however this is his first look at East Lake, and he may need a bit more experience.
Justin Thomas may be the main fancy this week, but two other players deserve a place in the portfolio. The first of those is Justin Rose, who has finished 2/6/4/2 on his last four visits here, and looks to be peaking at the just the right moment after finishing 10/10/2 in the first 3 legs of the play-offs. The other is Paul Casey, who has finished 4/5/4 on his previous three visits to East Lake, and finished fourth and fifth in the first two play-offs.
