2017 Stockholm Open Preview And Tips
Published on 15/10/17
The Stockholm Open, or ATP Stockholm, has been an ever present on the ATP Tour since 1969. It is an ATP 250 Series Event played on indoor hardcourts at the Kungliga Tennishallen, Stockholm, Sweden, and it has been won by legends of the game such as Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendle, Boris Becker, and Roger Federer.
However, only two previous champions are playing in this year’s event, 2013 champion Grigor Dimitrov, and last year’s winner Juan Martin del Potro.
2017 Stockholm Open Betting Guide
Grigor Dimitrov 10/3, Kevin Anderson 6/1, Juan Martin Del Potro 5/1, Jack Sock 10/1
2013 Champion Dimitrov, who was also runner-up in 2014, looks to have a relatively easy passage to the semi-finals. He’s only been beaten by Nadal in his last two tournaments, and should have little difficulty seeing off Herbert, who has been trying to find confidence on the Challenger Tour recently. He’s then likely to face either Troicki or Mischa Zverev, both of whom he holds excellent records against.
Jack Sock has been beaten in the final here in both of the last two years and, whilst he’s been struggling for form in his last few events, happy memories of this tournaments could easily motivate him this week. If they do, the draw looks to have been kind to him as he’s yet to lose to potential opponents like Chardy and Fognini.
Del Potro only succumbed to Roger Federer last week, and last year’s champion looks to have been handed a great chance of reaching the semi-finals here, as he holds perfect records against the likes of Struff and Sugita.
Kevin Anderson may have hit his peak for the season when reaching the US Open Final, but he looks to have a great chance of making the semi-finals. He’s been playing better than his likely first big hurdle Chung, whilst he’s beaten possible quarter-final opponent Verdasco all 3 times they’ve played on any surface other than clay.
Semi-Finals And Final
Anderson’s run may end at the semi-final stage though if he faces Del Potro, as the Argentinean has won all 6 of their previous matches. Meanwhile, if Sock rediscovers his form, he has beaten Dimitrov the last 3 times they’ve met. That could then set-up an interesting clash between Sock and Del Potro, with their head-to-heads standing at 1-1.
