The 2017 Shenzhen Open returns to the Genzon Golf Club in China for the third-consecutive year in 2017 and, as the course also hosted the Volvo China Open in 2014, there is some reasonable past form to go.
The course is only 7,145 yards in length, but the winners of the three tournaments played here were all in the top-30 for driving distance, whilst all-3 got hot with the putter, finishing 3rd, 4th and 6th in strokes gained putting.
The betting-market is headed by Bubba Watson, Ross Fisher and Tommy Fleetwood and, with Watson not at his best so far this season, the resurgent pair of Fisher and Fleetwood are of more interest. Fisher has looked more like the player he promised to be 10-years ago of late and, after finishing 15th and 16th here the last two seasons, he could easily win. However, the case for Fleetwood is even more compelling having finished 2nd and 3rd here on his first two visits, and he was out-of-form when 19th last year. He’s been playing some great golf of late, and victory here would cement his place in the world’s top-50.
However, whilst Fleetwood’s chances are obvious, there’s no getting away from the fact that the two previous winners of this event have been Asian, and the rest of this week’s betting portfolio reflects that.
Haotong Li proved that he’s got what it takes when winning last season’s China Open, and he also boasts a second-place finish here two-years-ago. He did miss the cut last season, but could easily bounce back after a break now on home soil.
I also don’t see why the last two winners, Soomin Lee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat can’t go well again after proving their liking for the course, and back in the comfort of a more recognisable environment than many of the countries that the European Tour takes them to. Meanwhile, the final-spot goes to Scott Hend, another player who has enjoyed great success on the Asian Tour, and who has finished 15th and 4th here the last two years.
