The Scarborough Stakes (Wednesday 13 Sept, 3.20) is a Listed Race run over 5-furlongs and 3 yards at Doncaster. It was first run in 1983, and has been won by subsequent Group 1 sprinters like Soba, Prohibit, Sole Power and Mecca’s Angel.
3 of the last 7 winners have been drawn in stall 2, including 2 of the last 3
Winners have been aged 3 to 8, with the last 3 all being 3-year-olds
None of the last 10 winners won last time out
Frankie Dettori is the only jockey to have won the race three times
Ryan Moore has ridden 2 of the last 10 winners
The SPs of the last 10 winners ranged from 5/2 to 14/1
Won a Listed Race on the prevailing soft ground already this season, and bettered that form in being twice runner-up behind Take Cover in two more Listed Races. Never run at Doncaster before, but this is arguably his easiest assignment of the season so far.
Recorded two excellent handicap wins recently, one of which was over course and distance, but was a length behind Final Venture last time and is now 2lb worse off. Also 12lb worse off with Thesme whom he beat by 1½-lengths at York two starts ago.
Prolific winner on the all-weather, but winless from 10 runs on turf. Has the assistance of Ryan Moore in the saddle today, but he didn’t win on him on his only previous attempt.
Go On Go On Go On
Won handicaps off marks of between 79 and 89 last season, but a mark of 93 leaves him with plenty to find on official ratings with a few of these. Last time out, he also finished last of 10 in the race that Final Venture finished second in, and Desert Law sixth.
Finished second to Priceless in last year’s renewal, and the way that rival beat Final Venture at Haydock this season suggests there shouldn’t be much between Thesme and Final Venture if they both turn up in decent form this time around. Frankie Dettori keeps the ride after placing on her last time for the second time in two attempts.
Only 3-year-old in the field, and sprung a 50/1 surprise on the all-weather last time. However, though many of her sire’s offspring handle soft ground, it will be a big surprise if this 74-rated horse wins this.
Victory for Final Venture will come as no surprise, but this race looks sure to have been a big target for Thesme after she finished second to Priceless in it last year. She also came back to form last time at York, whilst her stable has had 5/1 and 10/1 winners from its last 4 runners. The fact Frankie Dettori rides suggests the race’s leading rider thinks she’s got a decent chance.
