Memorial Village Golf Club is the course that Jack built. That’s 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus, and it’s a golf course that rewards great drivers of the ball, as it’s difficult to hit the smaller than usual bentgrass greens in regulation from out of the rough here. There’s also plenty of water waiting to gather errant shots.
As the US Open is just two-weeks away, it’s nice to see many of the world’s top players here. Dustin Johnson heads the market at 6/1, though that price may not be attractive to everyone considering he’s placed just twice in his last 6 attempts here. 12/1 for Jordan Spieth appeals even less as, though he was third here two years ago when in great form, he has performed poorly on his other three starts here. However, even Spieth is preferred to Jason Day who has yet to finish better than 27th here in eight attempts. Meanwhile, John Rahm can’t be ruled out such is the level of the young Spaniard’s form but, despite three top-5 finishes in his last six events, he hasn’t put two consecutive big finishes together, and this is his tournament debut.
Therefore, I’m going for 4 players in the 50/1+ price-range. The first of those is Tony Finau, who keeps catching the eye with some solid play in recent weeks, and he looks sure to put it altogether soon. It will hopefully be here where he has finished 8th and 11th in the last two years, and he looks decent value at 50/1.
Emiliano Grillo is also the sort of quality ball-striker who has taken to this place straight away, finishing 11th last year. He’s also been hanging around the leaderboards of late, finishing 11th and 24th on his last two starts, and the youngster will surely at least make the frame again very soon.
Meanwhile, two recent winners who could easily take advantage of their good recent form are Kevin Chappell and Billy Horschel. Chappell is very good at his best and, having only succumbed to Matt Kuchar late on here in 2013, this could easily be win number two now he’s confident he can get the job done after winning securing his first PGA Tour victory a few weeks ago. Horschel is another who thrives on confidence, and the former Fedex Cup Winner is more than capable of stringing a run of big performances together when in the sort of form which saw him back in the winner’s enclosure two weeks ago.
