2017 Kinloch Brae Chase Preview And Tip

Posted January 18, 2017 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

The Kinloch Brae Chase (2.15, Thursday) is a Grade-3 chase run over 2-miles 4-furlongs at Thurles. It has been won by a rare assortment of horses including Grand National winner Amberleigh House, Champion Chase winner Newmill, and twice by the now retired 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Don Cossack.

Horses must carry penalties for winning graded races, but this hasn’t stopped 4 of the last 10 winners carrying top-weight of 11-10, whilst two winners have carried 11-8, three 11-3, and one 10-12. Meanwhile, Jessica Harrington has trained 2 previous winners and Willie Mullins 1. However, perhaps more importantly, Gigginstown Stud have owned 3 of the last 4 winners.

6 runners are set to go to post for the 2017 Kinlock Brae Chase

Black Hercules 3/1

Last year’s JLT Novice Chase winner at the Cheltenham Festival has made little impression in two runs this season, but he often needs his first run of the year, and wasn’t suited by the drop to 2-miles last time. Won 2 out of 3 at around this trip, and has the stamina to stay further should this turn into a slog.

Sizing John 7/2

Finished 9-lengths in front of Black Hercules off level weights over 2-miles last time, and gets 2lb from that rival here. Raced mainly at 2-miles though, so does have to prove he stays this far. Trainer won this race twice before, and an obvious chance if he stays.

Smashingm 8/1

Won plenty of grade-2 and grade-3 chases at this sort of trip, though new trainer has run him over 3-miles without success on both runs this season. Officially second highest rated, though may need a new personal best to take care of 3 rivals who look less exposed.

Sub Lieutenant 6/4

Interesting that he’s 2 from 2 here over hurdles, and his early season form was very good, including when beating Lexus Chase winner Outlander. His third behind that rival and Djakadam last time was also very useful and his stable, which wasn’t in the best of form then, is back in much better form now. Owned by Gigginstown.

Boxing Along 100/1

Course winner, but the 13-year-old is around 50lb wrong at the weights – and is favourite to collect the €450 on offer for finishing sixth.

Letter Of Credit 80/1

Also a course winner, but is 30lb wrong at the weights. Cconnections should pick-up €900 for finishing fifth.

2017 Kinloch Brae Chase Summary

Sizing John continues to run creditably in defeat behind the mighty Douvan, but it remains to be seen whether he stays this far on this sort of ground. Meanwhile, Black Hercules could bounce back to form. However, Sub Lieutenant looks the solid option. He is proven over the course, and his form and rating suggest he’s the best horse in the race. He’s also owned by Gigginstown Stud, who are bidding for a fourth winner in 5 Years, and with his stable in form he can provide it.
