2017 European Masters Summary

The European Masters matches start in a best of 7 frames format which gives all players a chance of beating higher-ranked opponents if they get off to a red-hot start, and a few of the better players will be coming in without much recent match practice. However, the better players will be more at home if they reach the best of 11 frames semi-finals, whilst the final is best of 17 frames, and we can only hope we get a last-frame thriller like the one Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan produced last year.

It’s easy to make a case for the likes of Selby, Trump and Higgins but, despite this being a ranking tournament, it doesn’t yet carry much prestige. Therefore, it could pay to look beyond the obvious, and the player who victory would mean the most to this week may well be home favourite Luca Brecel. Having moved up to number 12 in the world rankings after victory in China earlier in the season, the Belgian should be able to play freely, and he’s bound to have been practising hard. Meanwhile, one player who will be looking for a big week is world number 17 Ryan Day, who has also been in winning form this season at the Riga Masters, and a good showing here could see him return to the all-important top-16.
