2017 English Open Snooker Preview And Tips

The English Open was only introduced into the Professional Snooker Calendar in 2016, and it is part of the Home Series of events scheduled to take place in the UK, alongside the Welsh Open, Irish Open and Scottish Open – with a big bonus up for grabs for any players who can win all four events in one season.

Liang Wenbo was somewhat of a shock winner last season, and was even a big underdog in the final where he defeated one of the home favourites Judd Trump 9-6 at Event City in Manchester. However, this year’s event will be staged by the Barnsley Metrodome.

Matches are best of 7 frames up to the quarter-finals, which are best of 9 frames, whilst the semi-final are best of 11 frames, and the final best of 17 frames.

2017 English Open Snooker Tips

As ever, the best-of-7-frames opening rounds give outsiders a good chance, but I’m hoping that Judd Trump can go one better this year after hitting form earlier this month in Belgium. The world number 4 certainly strung together a great run of performances last year, and more is expected now he’s added consistency to his outrageous potting.

However, I also can’t resist an each-way bet on Mark Williams. The ageing Welshman looks nearly back to his best in the twilight of his career and, sitting just one place outside the world’s top-16, he knows this is as good a chance as any to get back into the highest echelon of professional snooker.
