2017 ATP Shanghai Tennis Preview And Tips
Published on 09/10/17
The ATP Shanghai, also known as the Shanghai Masters, is played on the outdoor hardcourts of the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China. It is an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Event and, having been first played in 2009, it has been won three times by both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. However, in the absence of those two players, it is worth noting that Roger Federer won here in 2014, and was runner-up in 2010. Other notable runner-ups include Roberto Bautista-Agut and Juan Martin del Potro.
Rafa Nadal 9/4, Roger Federer 11/4, Alexander Zverev 10/1, Nick Kyrgios 16/1, Marin Cilic 20/1, Juan Martin Del Potro 20/1, David Goffin 50/1
World Number One Rafa Nadal was at his clinical best in the final in Beijing last week, beating Nicky Kyrgios more easily than he had anyone else all week, and it may be that it took the Spaniard that long to hit peak form after being absent since his US Open victory. If that’s the case, he will probably take this first-quarter in his quest to win this title for the first time. However, it may not be all plain sailing, as the likes of Fabio Fognini, Lucas Pouille and Grigor Dimitrov have all beaten him before. However, the only player to have beaten Nadal this year in the first quarter is Sam Querrey.
If Nick Kyrgios hasn’t lost the plot after being destroyed by Nadal on Sunday, he’ll draw confidence from the fact he beat main rival Marin Cilic the only previous time they played on hardcourts. However, he could meet his match in the quarter-finals, as he has a good chance of playing Kevin Anderson, who has beaten the Australian in both their previous matches.
Juan Martin del Potro and Alexander Zverev are seeded to meet in the last 16 and, with Zverev having had a long season, it could be del Potro who progresses to play either Dominic Thiem or John Isner for a place in the semis – with del Potro having a great record against both players.
Nobody comes into this tournament in better form that David Goffin but, though he’ll have his supporters at 50/1, he’s been drawn in the hardest looking quarter. He trails potential last-16 opponent Bautista-Agut 3-1 on head-to-heads, whilst he’s only taken two-sets on his way to five straight defeats by Roger Federer. Federer has also beaten Bautista-Agut in all their previous encounters.
Semi-Finals And Final
This is a big event and, as it’s one that Nadal hasn’t won previously, he looks sure to be motivated. He’s also 5-0 against Anderson. Meanwhile, it may be worth taking on Federer after an absence. If it is, del Potro may be the one to take advantage having beaten him in the US Open. An inform Nadal is fancied to strengthen his position as World Number One but, as del Potro has won 5 of their 14 matches, he also looks worth an each-way investment.
