2017 Celebration Mile Stakes Preview And Tip

Posted August 25, 2017 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

The Celebration Mile (Saturday 24th August, 3.20) is a Group 2 Race run at Goodwood over a mile, with recent high-profile winners including Lightning Spear, Kodi Bear, Poet’s Voice, and Raven’s Pass.

4 of the last 6 winners were drawn 1 or 2, the other 2 were drawn in stall 6

Only 2 winners had won last time out

Winners had run 9 to 56 days earlier

No trainer jockey has won the race twice

SPs have ranged from 1/2  to 20/1

Runner-By-Runner Guide

Group winner who has shown decent form over a mile, though may prefer further after excellent run over 10-furlongs last time. Officially has 5lb to find with Lighting Spear.

Lightning Spear

Last year’s winner usually runs well here, and every chance on doubling up after finishing third in this year’s Sussex Stakes on ground softer than ideal. 3lb clear of his nearest rival on official ratings

Oh This Is Us

Won a handicap at Goodwood, but could only finish 11th in a Group 2 won by Breton Rock at Glorious Goodwood. Looks like he needs a career best, but improvement appears to have plateaued for now.

Opal Tiara

Beat Convey here once, and has continued to perform well in small-field Group Races. This looks tough though, and rated 10lb lower than Lightning Spear.

Richard Pankhurst

Won three races at 7-furlongs, but yet to score at a mile. Disappointing on seasonal return, and it will be interesting to see whether Andrea Atzeni can get a tune out of him around a course he rides well.

Group 3 winner who ran well when second in last year’s renewal to Lightning Spear. However, he has not run since, and has to concede race fitness to higher-rated rivals.

Lightning Spear has been mixing it with the best around this season and, having looked back to something like his best last time in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, he should find this Group 2 Race much easier.

Our Prediction : Lightning Spear @ 11/10 William Hill
