The AT&T Byron Nelson Championship has been won by some of the greatest names in golf, including Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Payne Stewart, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickleson, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott and Jason Day, but Sergio Garcia remains the only player to have won it twice.
The tournament takes place at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Texas, and the course is only a mere 7,166 yards; short by modern standards. The course features tree-lined fairways and lots of water, whilst averaged-sized Bentgrass Greens can usually be measured at about 11 on the Stimpmeter.
Despite the short nature of the course, driving distance has been a big advantage in many recent renewals, as has a high-percentage of greens hit in regulation.
If that’s the case again, then Dustin Johnson could easily get back in the winner’s enclosure this week. Some will be disappointed because he only finished 12th at the Players Championship but, as that effort saw him better his previous best finish there by 16 places, it can only be taken as a positive. His form before that was 1/1/1/2 and he could easily claim another title he has gone close to winning previously with five top-12 finishes in 6 appearances.
Brooks Koepka is also in decent form having finished 11/2/5/16 on his last four starts, and this is a course where he has already shone having finished 16th two years ago, and losing out in a play-off last year. It’s hard to see why he won’t go well again this week, and is impossible to leave out of calculations.
Tony Finau is another big-hitter who looks to have taken a shine to this place with finishes of 10th and 12th and, with two top-5 finishes in his last 6 starts, this could easily be another week where he features prominently on the leaderboard.
Last, but by no means least, Bud Cauley has a nice mix of course form and current form. Fourth last year, he looks the type of player that is sure to make his PGA Tour breakthrough sooner rather than later, and current form of 9/10/5 suggests this could be a big week for the youngster.
