2017 ATP Basel Preview And Tip
The ATP Basel, also known as the Swiss Indoors, is an ATP 500 Series Event played on the indoor hardcourts at Basel’s St Jakobshalle. It was first played in 1970, and has been won be tennis stars such as Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Pete Sampras and Novak Djokovic. However, much to the delight of the Swiss crowds, 7 of the last 11 renewals have been won by Roger Federer, though the Swiss maestro has also been a beaten finalist 5-times this century.
ATP Basel Betting Guide
Roger Federer 10/11, Juan Martin Del Potro 7/1, Marin Cilic 7/1, David Goffin 12/1, Roberto Bautista-Agut 20/1
Roger Federer is seeded one in the absence of Rafa Nadal, but he faces a couple of interesting youngsters in his quarter who may demand he brings his A-game to the opening exchanges. First-round opponent Frances Tiafoe is especially interesting having taken Federer to 5-sets at the US Open, whilst it could also be the first time that Federer faces Canadian’s future teenage star Denis Shapavolov. However, on such a happy hunting ground, and having shown he’s back to his best two-weeks ago, Federer should progress to the semis.
A quarter to avoid like the plague, as there is little form to go on. Goffin will be favourite, but he has lost matches to both Chung and Bedene.
Ryan Harrison will be in confident mood having beaten Kevin Anderson recently, and he’ll be fancying making the quarter-finals with positive records against Dolgopolov and Bautista-Agut. However, if the efforts of the last couple of weeks haven’t taken the edge off two-time tournament winner Juan Martin Del Potro, he may go out at the hands of the Argentinean in the semi-finals.
Second seed Marin Cilic is by far the biggest name in the fourth quarter but, like Federer, he’ll may need to be at his best in the early exchanges with an opening match against Verdasco, whom he only leads 7-5 in head-to-heads. However, if he gets through that match, he should progress to the semi-finals.
Semi-Finals and Final
If Federer and Goffin survive their quarters, Federer will be a strong fancy to progress to the final as he holds a 5-0 lead over Goffin, dropping just two-sets in those 5 matches. He should then meet Del Potro in the final, as he holds a 9-2 lead over Cilic, including winning their last 6 matches. That could set up a thrilling final between Federer and Del Potro and, though Feder leads their previous encounters 17-6, it is Del Potro who has won both their previous meetings here, both of which were finals. Therefore, the bet this week has to be Del Potro Each-way.
